Fresno State?s geomatics engineering program is moving into the future with a 3-D technology called zSpace.?

With zSpace, students use a stylus to manipulate and control three-dimensional images. They have to use specially designed, $500 3-D glasses with five points of reference to help track the image. Onlookers use glasses just like the kind one would get at a traditional 3-D movie.

This new technology came to the university due in large part to Riadh Munjy, doctor of geomatics engineering and program coordinator, and contributions from donors. Engineering East Room 101 was able to update its photogrammetry equipment.

The purpose of the photogrammetry lab is to let geomatics engineering students take measurements based off of 2-D images.

?Well the whole idea basically in geomatics, we would like to do measurements,? Munjy said. ?We do measurements using GPS equipment. We do measurements taken from picture from airplanes, from satellites, even pictures in the water, so anything that we can measure and can produce data in X-Y-Z. We would like to visualize and try to measure to access the accuracy of that equipment.?

Munjy said there are a variety of potential uses for this type of 3-D technology beyond simple entertainment. He cited three-dimensional surgery as a way that students can acquire experience applicable to their career paths.

In the medical field, for example, the equipment and techniques need to be precise, which the zSpace program tries to replicate to provide the best model possible.

?The tolerance is very, very small,? Munjy said. ?He (a student using the technology) can not afford to make mistakes that large, so the student has to be very careful how to take these pictures and how to put them together, so that final results are acceptable to a medical doctor in that case.?

Grady Roth is a senior in the geomatics engineering department. He said there are many ways that different majors can make use of zSpace.

?You?ll see that there?s a house you can explore, so construction,? Roth said. ?I just picked up a part of some sort, a mechanical engineering kind of thing designed like that. You can do bridges as well?civil engineering.

?The way our major ties in with all that is we do the measurements for all that as well as the 3-D aspect with this (the equipment). We learn the math and how to create these three-dimensional images.?

Munjy said that he has had students from other disciplines who have taken an interest in using this new technology for their own non-engineering majors.

?There has been some interest from computer science students to come and make their senior projects,? he said, ?because the equipment we have is very unique and everybody is interested to get their hands on it.?

For students to get access to zSpace they need to enroll in the corresponding upper-division geomatics engineering class. It is not a class you can simply enroll in though. The class relies heavily on linear algebra, so there are a variety of necessary math prerequisites just to get into the class.

?We are not only interested in the pictures, but the math behind them,? Munjy said. ?We spend quite a bit of math and quite a bit of introductory courses to get them to where they are supposed to be.?

A point of pride for Munjy is that the money used to buy the equipment did not have to come from the university.

?All the equipment that you see over here, not a cent came from the state. It all came from private donations,? Munjy said. ?For the hardware, we were able to get money.? And all the software, what we couldn?t buy was donated. I have 14 computers, each with 32 gigabytes of RAM. Each one has about $25,000 software on each computer minimum.?

Munjy said the equipment update was necessary, because the previous hardware was older than most of the students.

?If you had come a year and a half ago, what you would have seen is a room full of equipment from the ?40s, ?50s and ?60s era; maybe one or two machines from the ?70s and one from the ?80s,? he said.

Munjy said that everyone affiliated with the university should be proud to have such a unique and state-of-the-art lab on campus. It is one of the few programs of its kind in the nation.

?I think it?s one of the unique labs in the nation now,? Munjy said. ?Everybody?s proud of it. The students are very enthusiastic, and they are very excited and eager to use the equipment and get more knowledge out of the systems.?

Senate approves Hagel as new secretary of defense

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Senate confirmed Chuck Hagel as President Barack Obama's new secretary of defense on Tuesday, after an unusually acrimonious confirmation fight that threatened to complicate his work as civilian leader at the Pentagon.

The Senate voted 58-41 to confirm the former Republican senator, the closest vote ever to approve a defense secretary.

Just four Republicans - Mike Johanns of Nebraska, who holds Hagel's old Senate seat, Thad Cochran of Mississippi, Richard Shelby of Alabama and Rand Paul of Kentucky - joined the Democrats and independents in support of Hagel's nomination.

After the hard-fought victory, the Democratic president said he was pleased there had been bipartisan support for Hagel, a decorated veteran who served during the Vietnam War as an enlisted man before becoming a Republican U.S. senator.

"I am grateful to Chuck for reminding us that when it comes to our national defense, we are not Democrats or Republicans, we are Americans, and our greatest responsibility is the security of the American people," Obama said.

The bruising battle over Hagel was one of many bitter partisan struggles between Democrats and Republicans at a time when Congress is widely criticized for its inability to agree on even the most basic measures to run the country.

The Senate had voted earlier on Tuesday to end debate on Hagel and move forward, almost two weeks after Republicans launched a filibuster to block the nomination. It was the first ever used to delay consideration of a defense nominee, prompting Democrats to accuse Republicans of jeopardizing national security.

Republicans have also challenged Obama's choice to be CIA director, John Brennan, although that nomination appears to be on track, with a vote by the Senate Intelligence Committee expected on Thursday.

In a sign that opposition to Obama's nominations could be easing, the Senate Finance Committee on Tuesday backed his nominee to lead the U.S. Treasury, Jack Lew, with the support of about half the panel's Republicans.

BUDGET, IRAN, ISRAEL AMONG CONCERNS

Hagel had angered party leaders as a senator when he criticized former President George W. Bush's handling of the Iraq war.

Many Republicans opposed to Hagel's nomination raised questions about whether he is sufficiently supportive of Israel, tough enough on Iran or truly committed to maintaining a robust nuclear deterrent.

After Hagel's shaky performance during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee, opponents questioned whether he was capable of running the vast Pentagon bureaucracy. Some feared he would be too complicit in efforts by Obama to cut Pentagon spending as a way to deal with yawning U.S. budget deficits.

Some defense industry executives worried that Hagel would be hamstrung from the start, saying his difficult confirmation could severely limit his ability to negotiate with Congress.

"They've neutered him already," said one industry executive, who was not authorized to speak publicly.

Although the Senate rejected John Tower as President George Bush's Pentagon pick in 1989 by a 53-47 vote, defense nominees are typically confirmed by large margins. Leon Panetta, whom Hagel replaces as defense secretary, was approved by a unanimous vote of 100 to nothing in June 2011.

But political experts said such concerns were overblown, given the vast partisan divide that already exists between the Democratic White House and Republicans in Congress on most issues.

"The confirmation process probably leaves a few light scars on Hagel because Republican critics have raised doubts about his judgment," said Sarah Binder, a congressional expert at the Brookings Institution.

"But I think Hagel would have faced tough scrutiny and criticism from Republicans once in office, even had he originally sailed to confirmation," she said.

Hagel said he was honored to return to public service. "I will work closely with Congress to ensure that we maintain the strongest military in the world and continue to protect this great nation," he said in a statement.

Hagel will be sworn in on Wednesday morning.

SEQUESTRATION CUTS LOOM OVER PENTAGON

Hagel's confirmation comes as the Pentagon faces the prospect of cutting $46 billion in spending over the next seven months of the fiscal year. The cut, scheduled to go into effect on Friday, comes as the department is already implementing $487 billion in spending reductions over the next decade.

Some of Hagel's most vehement opponents made a last-ditch appeal to stop the nomination before the vote.

James Inhofe, the senior Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, said he had even called Panetta and asked him not to retire. Panetta, 74, who has made no secret of his desire to be home in California, declined.

After the vote, Inhofe said he still had "serious concerns" about Hagel's ability to lead the Department of Defense but was "ready and willing" to work with him. He urged Hagel to make his first order of business averting the looming defense cuts.

For 1st time since 1999, music revenues inch up

(AP) ? More than a decade after online file swapping tipped the music industry into turmoil, record executives may finally be getting a sliver of good news.

Industry revenue is up. A measly 0.3 percent, but it's still up.

"We're on the path to recovery," said Frances Moore, whose International Federation of the Phonographic Industry put together the figures released in a report Tuesday. "There's a palpable buzz in the air."

In her forward to the IFPI report, Moore said the return to growth was a tribute to the transformation of the music industry, saying it had "adapted to the Internet world."

That change has been a long time coming. Online song sharing popularized by services such as Napster at the turn of the millennium seriously destabilized the industry, which reacted with a barrage of lawsuits and lobbying. But the war on piracy failed to stem the tide of free music, and by the time executives finally began making legal music available through download services such as Apple Inc.'s iTunes, the industry was in a free fall.

Since its 1999 peak, the global music industry's revenues have crashed more than 40 percent. Tuesday's figures, which show a rise in global revenue from $16.4 billion in 2011 to $16.5 billion in 2012, are the first hint of growth in more than a decade.

Mark Mulligan, of U.K.-based MIDiA consulting, warned that Tuesday's figures did not mean the industry had put its misery years behind it.

"We're probably near the bottom," he said, "but it's so marginal we could easily have another year or two where it could get worse."

The physical music market ? everything from vinyl records to DVDs ? continues to contract, losing another $500 million in revenue between 2011 and 2012, according to Tuesday's IFPI figures. The industry group has placed its bets on downloads, streaming, and subscription services to make up for lost ground, but there's still a long way to go.

Downloads and streaming audio now account for most of the music sold in the United States and Scandinavia, but physical music still accounts for the majority of industry revenue worldwide.

Illegal music downloads remain a problem worldwide, particularly in potentially huge markets such as Russia, India, and China. Moore urged governments to follow the example of the international enforcement action against Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom, accused by American prosecutors of facilitating millions of illegal downloads. Dotcom, who is fighting an attempt to extradite him from New Zealand to the United States, denies the allegations.

The report hailed the action against Megaupload and sites like The Pirate Bay ? which has been blocked by several European countries ? but it estimated that 32 percent of all Internet users still regularly downloaded pirated music.

"What other industry has to cope with a third of its customers being able to get copies of its products from illegal services?" Moore said.

With growth uneven across various countries and piracy still a stubborn problem, it could take years for the industry to return to its previous health. If it ever does.

Mulligan said he believes some of the lost revenue may never be recovered, with many casual users who used to buy the odd CD turning to free services such as YouTube, television music channels, or Internet radio instead.

"This is a case of managed decline," he said, predicting "a sustainable but smaller market built around more engaged music fans."

Thousands jam St. Peter's for pope's last audience

VATICAN CITY (AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI greeted the Catholic masses in St. Peter's Square Wednesday for the last time before retiring, making several rounds of the square as crowds cheered wildly and stopping to kiss a half-dozen children brought up to him by his secretary.

Tens of thousands of people toting banners saying "Grazie!" ? "thank you" ? jammed the piazza to bid farewell to the pope at his final general audience ? the appointment he has kept each week to teach the world about the Catholic faith.

Pilgrims and curiosity-seekers picked spots along the main boulevard leading to the square to watch Wednesday's event on giant TV screens. Some 50,000 tickets were requested for Benedict's final master class, but Italian media estimated the number of people actually attending could be double that.

"It's difficult ? the emotion is so big," said Jan Marie, a 53-year-old Roman in his first years as a seminarian. "We came to support the pope's decision."

With chants of "Benedetto" erupting every so often, the mood was far more buoyant than during the pope's final Sunday blessing and recalled the jubilant turnouts that often accompanied him at World Youth Days and events involving his predecessor, Pope John Paul II.

Benedict on Thursday will become the first pope in 600 years to resign, a decision he said he took after realizing that, at 85, he simply didn't have the strength of mind or body to carry on. He will meet Thursday morning with cardinals for a final time, then fly by helicopter to the papal residence at Castel Gandolfo south of Rome.

There, at 8 p.m., the doors of the palazzo will close and the Swiss Guards in attendance will go off duty, their service protecting the head of the Catholic Church over ? for now.

Many of the cardinals who will choose Benedict's successor were in St. Peter's Square for his final audience, including retired Los Angeles Cardinal Roger Mahony, object of a grass-roots campaign in the U.S. to persuade him to recuse himself for having covered up for sexually abusive priests. Mahony has said he will vote.

Vatican officials say cardinals will begin meeting on Monday to decide when to set the date for the conclave to elect the next pope.

But the rank-and-file in the crowd on Wednesday weren't so concerned with the future; they wanted to savor the final moments with the pope they have known for eight years.

"I came to thank him for the testimony that he has given the church," said Maria Cristina Chiarini, a 52-year-old homemaker who traveled by train early Wednesday from Lugo, near Ravenna, with some 60 members of her parish. "There's nostalgia, human nostalgia, but also comfort, because as a Christian we have hope. The Lord won't leave us without a guide."

New Source Found For Cold, Deep Antarctic Currents

With help from seals, scientists have discovered a new source for the coldest, deepest water in the ocean.

Instruments glued to seals' heads tracked Antarctic Bottom Water flowing down deep canyons off Cape Darnley in East Antarctica. The spot was an unexpected font of the bottom water ? cold, dense, salty water ? because it lacks the broad underwater shelf of the unique current's three known sources. These shallow shelves stick out from the continent's edge. Cold water flows over the edge to the abyssal depths like a frigid underwater waterfall.

Finding the Cape Darnley bottom water, which accounts for about 10 percent of the world's Antarctic Bottom Water, solves a long-standing problem. The amount of cold water coming from Antarctica exceeded that from the three other sites.

"At least one more source was inferred to exist, but had stubbornly eluded detection," Michael Meredith, an oceanographer with the British Antarctic Survey, wrote in an article accompanying the study in the journal Nature Geoscience. Meredith was not involved in the research.

"Our discovery is the missing piece of a 30-year-old puzzle regarding the circumpolar distribution of global Antarctic Bottom Water supply," said Kay Ohshima, an oceanographer at Hokkaido University in Japan and lead author of the study.

The discovery will also affect climate change models, in which bottom water circulation plays an important role. The deep bottom current drives large-scale ocean circulation, helping regulate Earth's climate, Ohshima said.

"It is vital that this newly found Cape Darnley Bottom Water be incorporated into the global assessment of the meridian ocean circulation, a key element of the climate system. This will improve numerical simulations predicting its response to long-term climate change," Ohshima told OurAmazingPlanet.

The findings are detailed in the Feb. 24 issue of the journal Nature Geoscience.

Salty water sinks

Antarctic Bottom Water forms in the winter, when icy winds and temperatures freeze seawater into sea ice, expelling salt. The remaining salty,

chilly water is denser than the water around it, and it sinks downward. The Cape Darnley water was some of the saltiest shelf water ever measured around the Antarctic continent. This deep current flows north, away from the continent, and transports oxygen and carbon dioxide around the planet.

Cape Darnley is a region of intense sea ice formation in the winter, with a persistent polynya ? ocean kept open to the atmosphere and surrounded by sea ice. In fact, in 2008, when the international research team arrived in Antarctica to set up their instruments, they were forced to abandon their original plans and use a backup site because of heavy ice, Ohshima said. It was a lucky break, because the backup mooring, called M3, was the best place for catching Cape Darnley's bottom water current, he added.

The researcher's good luck continued with the deep-diving seals, which seek squid and other prey down to 5,500 feet (1,700 meters). Unlike scientific instruments, the seals areuninhibited by sea ice. [Images: Antarctic Seals Go Where Scientists Can't]

"We've been watching the seals for many years and you have no control [over] where they go, how deep they dive and how long they choose to stay there," said Guy Williams, a sea ice specialist at the University of Tasmania in Hobart. After watching 20 migrating seals avoid Cape Darnley, one finally turned and headed straight into the "sweet spot" the researchers were hoping for, he said. "If not for that seal, this puzzle would not have been solved," Williams told OurAmazingPlanet in an email interview.

More discoveries possible

Ohshima said he thinks there could be additional Antarctica Bottom Water sources in regions similar to Darnley.

"The Cape Darnley region demonstrates conclusively that a relatively narrow section of continental shelf can produce Antarctic Bottom Waterfrom polynya-driven sea-ice production alone. We speculate that there could be further Antarctic Bottom Water-formation discoveries in similar polynyas," he said.

The team is conducting further studies to track the current and get a better estimate of how much water flows into the ocean bottom from Cape Darnley.

Lyoto Machida pulls out split-decision win over Dan Henderson at UFC 157

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Lyoto Machida took a split decision over Dan Henderson in the co-main event at UFC 157 on Saturday. The judges saw it 29-28, 28-29, 29-28 for Machida.

Machida was elusive as usual in the first round, but Henderson was able to sneak in and land a few kicks and punches. At the end of the round, Machida took Henderson down with a leg trip and landed strikes.

The second round showed Machida still being elusive and keeping his distance from Henderson. Machida tried for a front kick several times, but couldn't land it. Meanwhile, Henderson couldn't land much.

[Also: Ronda Rousey survives UFC debut, wins via first-round arm bar]

Henderson is known for his big, overhand punches. Most of the time, when he throws it, it can mean the end of a fight. However, he had trouble getting close enough to Machida for the overhand to work.

In the third round, Machida moved in for a takedown but ended up with Henderson on top. Henderson used elbows from the top, but Machida was able to get out with less than two minutes left in the fight.

Before the fight, UFC president Dana White said that the winner of this bout will get the next title shot. UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will put the title up against Chael Sonnen in April, but the next fight will likely go to Machida.

[Also: Josh Koscheck suffers upset loss]

Machida was once the UFC light heavyweight champion, but lost the title to Rua in 2010. Since then, he has wins over Randy Couture and Ryan Bader, but losses to current champion Jon Jones and Quinton Jackson. It will be his third chance at the light heavyweight title. He won it with a knockout of Rashad Evans in 2009, but lost to Jones in 2011.

Henderson had a long layoff between fights. His last bout was one of the best in MMA history. In November of 2011, Henderson defeated Mauricio Rua in a five-round decision. Since then, Henderson had a fight lined up with Jones in September, but had to pull out at the last minute because of a knee injury. His record falls to 29-9. He's 42 years old, and against Machida, looked slow and old for the first time in his career.

Brain's 'stroke shielding' cracked

A part of the brain's ability to shield itself from the destructive damage caused by a stroke has been explained by researchers.

It has been known for more than 85 years that some brain cells could withstand being starved of oxygen.

Scientists, writing in the journal Nature Medicine, have shown how these cells switch into survival mode.

They hope to one-day find a drug which uses the same trick to protect the whole brain.

Treating a stroke is a race against time. Clots that block the blood supply prevent the flow of oxygen and sugar to brain cells, which then rapidly die.

But in 1926, it was noticed that some cells in the hippocampus, the part of the brain involved in memory, did not follow this rule.

?Start Quote

"We have shown for the first time that the brain has mechanisms that it can use to protect itself and keep brain cells alive?

End Quote Prof Alastair Buchan Oxford University

"They're staying alive when the prediction would say that they should die," said Prof Alastair Buchan from Oxford University who has investigated how they survive.

I'm a survivor

Experiments on rats showed that these surviving-cells started producing a protein called hamartin - which forces cells to conserve energy. They stop producing new proteins and break down existing ones to access the raw materials.

When the researchers prevented the cells from producing hamartin, they died just like other cells.

Prof Buchan said: "We have shown for the first time that the brain has mechanisms that it can use to protect itself and keep brain cells alive."

Their aim is to develop a drug that can produce the same effect, which could be given when an ambulance arrived. This would buy the brain time until clot-busting drugs could be given in hospital.

The researchers do not know why these cells have this defence, but other nearby cells in the hippocampus do not. There are differences in function. The cells that die are known as CA1 cells which are very plastic and are involved in laying down memories whereas the surviving, or CA3, cells are less adaptable.

Speaking to BBC News online, Prof Buchan said the focus of this research was on "ways to keep brain cells alive" which could have impacts beyond stroke - such as in Alzheimer's disease and spinal cord injuries.

Commenting on the study, Dr Clare Walton from the Stroke Association said: "Previous research has shown that some brain cells are naturally more resilient than others, and this study has identified a particular protein in the cells that is responsible.

"In the future, researchers could try to turn on this protein in other, less resilient brain cells to reduce the brain damage caused by stroke.

"The findings of this research are exciting, but we are still a long way off from developing a new stroke treatment."

(AP) ? Spanish police say they arrested 45 people, including nine minors, in street violence after a large anti-austerity protest outside parliament. Dozens sustained minor injuries.

Tens of thousands of people marched to parliament to demonstrate against tax hikes, spending cuts, sky-high unemployment and alleged corruption. As the protest ended late Saturday, groups of youths threw bar chairs into a road and burned garbage containers.

Police later found four firebombs in a backpack abandoned on a street. The Interior Ministry says officers then seized 22 firecrackers, five flares and a stick from two minors near Madrid's main railway station.

The ministry also said in a statement Sunday that 40 people, including 12 police officers, received minor injuries in the clashes. Two of the officers received hospital treatment.

Rubio: Israel?s Security Is Key to Middle East Peace

Sen. Marco Rubio says Israel?s security must come first before a settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian dispute.

?No nation in the world has suffered more in recent times than Israel from war and violence, in terms of its neighbors,? the Florida Republican said at a press conference closing out a five-day trip to the Middle East, The Jerusalem Post reports.

?The greatest advancements in this [Israeli-Palestinian] process have always been made when Israel felt secure. There is a direct relationship between Israel?s security and the ability to make concessions and move forward.?

Urgent:
High Gas Prices: Is it Obama's Fault? Vote Now

Rubio said the ultimate solution to the conflict would have to be a separate state for Palestinians. But insisted it must be negotiated between the two parties and not dictated by the United States or international agencies.

In addition, he said the United States should not intervene in Israel?s settlement policy and attempt to "dictate what the resolution of that issue should be.

The senator also cautioned against high expectations for the peace process beyond ?what is immediately realistic, because expectations that are elevated, and then unmet, become counterproductive to the entire process.?

The visit to Israel, Jordan, and the West Bank by Rubio, a possible presidential contender in 2016, comes several weeks before President Barack Obama's scheduled trip to Israel next month. It will be Obama's first visit to the Jewish state as president.

Twitter roundup: Friends of Hamas edition

Today we learned that the big Republican/Rand Paul scoop on Chuck Hagel possibly being friends with some organization called "Friends of Hamas" turned out to be based on one guy's sarcastic quip that stupid people took seriously. The notable handicap of the group not actually existing has not, however, diminished the certainty of the Breitbart "reporters" as to how Hagel is probably secret BFFs with them, which is a damn impressive thing all the way around.

So anyway, here's some people laughing at them. Feel free to join in.

Today is a very sad day for us. Nobody believes we exist. But if you can't believe in a figment of your imagination what can you believe in?

Cardinal Dolan Questioned on Sex Abuse Before Trip to Rome

Next week, New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan will be enjoying the comforts of Rome as part of the conclave that will choose the next pope, which could even be him, although his chances are considered slim. But first, the ugly stuff: Dolan was deposed for three hours yesterday about sexual abuse at the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, which he led from 2002 to 2009, where 575 people have filed claims against the church over the years. As the archdiocese attempts to file bankruptcy, lawyers for the victims want to know what Dolan knew and when.

"Today Cardinal Dolan had the long-awaited opportunity to talk about his decision nine years ago in Milwaukee to publicize the names of priests who had abused children and how he responded to the tragedy of past clergy sexual abuse of minors, during the time he was privileged to serve as Archbishop of Milwaukee," said an Archdiocese of New York spokesperson in a statement. "He has indicated over the past two years that he was eager to cooperate in whatever way he could."

An attorney for the plaintiffs sees it another way: "The deposition of Cardinal Dolan is necessary to show that there?s been a longstanding pattern and practice to keep secrets and keep the survivors from knowing that there had been a fraud committed," he told the New York Times. A representative for the victims' group Survivors Network of Those Abused by Priests argued that Dolan "did a lot of creative maneuvering of priest sex offenders and creative accounting of church money," as previously reported, without punishing those responsible.

While Dolan's exact answers from yesterday are not yet known, the Survivors' Network plans to make his testimony public. Whether that will affect his distant chances to become pope, only the conclave really knows.

Video: Rossen Reports: Are plumbers charging you unnecessarily?

>>> report investigation. jeff and his team have looked into all kinds of contractors and this time, plumbers, will they be honest and competent. hey, jeff, we've been waiting for this.

>> something asked about many time, honest or competent. when you call a plumber many times you trust them for help to find the problem and fix it at a fair price . we're at it again with our hidden cameras testing plumbers to see who gets it right and who lands in hot water .

>> reporter: you stand behind your story she needs a new hot water heater . we just want a plumber to fix a small atlantleak.

>> why do you want to charge her $ 1900 ?

>> reporter: these experts want to charge her for things that aren't even broken. we rented this house in suburban, new jersey.

>> it should have been in your backpack. did you look in your backpack?

>> reporter: home to liz, mother of four. down in this basement, she has a hot water heater in good shape.

>> everything looks fine on this.

>> reporter: we know because we had three experts all licensed master plumbers inspect it top to bottom.

>> excellent condition.

>> i'm confident that's in good working order.

>> in excellent condition.

>> reporter: one of the experts was pete boros, chairman of licensing board for plumbers.

>> reporter: how many years in the business?

>> over 30 years.

>> reporter: he set up a simple problem with the heater, churning this screw just a hair to start a small leak from this valve, creating a puddle on the floor. the fix, easy. just tighten the screw, something he says any plumber should spot in a minute.

>> reporter: if one of these companies says you need repairs?

>> that would not be true.

>> reporter: we wired the house with hidden cameras covering every angle.

>> i need someone to come out and look at my hot water heater .

>> reporter: then had our mom called 10 water companies to diagnose the leak. as each company shows up, we're watching with our expert from a control room upstairs.

>> there he is.

>> reporter: things start off great. within a minute, this first plumber finds and fixes the problem, that easy churn of the screw.

>> the drain valve was just slightly open just a hair. i just closed it.

>> thank you.

>> okay.

>> okay. what do i owe you for that?

>> that's okay. no problem.

>> nothing? are you kidding?

>> no problem.

>> reporter: amazing. these next few plumbers also fixed the problem in just minutes.

>> that's it?

>> yeah.

>> reporter: but our luck is about to go down the drain. meet frank.

>> liz. good to meet you, frank.

>> reporter: he checks the tank. and watch, frank finds and fixes the leak, churning that screw. problem solved , but he tells our mom, there's still a drip.

>> the water has to be drained and then you need a new valve put on.

>> that will fix the leak?

>> that will fix the leak.

>> reporter: that's right, even though he fixed the leak, he still wants to put in a brand new valve. price, $359.

>> what do you make of that?

>> i think he's trying to take advantage of the homeowner financially.

>> reporter: we have questions for frank.

>> hi, jeff rossen from nbc news. you just told her she needs a new valve. why?

>> it was leaking.

>> reporter: you tightened it and it stopped leaking.

>> it was still forming a drip.

>> reporter: actually the dripping had stopped but he says he didn't want to hang around and make sure or have to come back.

>> reporter: do you stand by this?

>> for what i saw? yes.

>> reporter: if you think he's pricey, this next plumber takes it to another level.

>> the basement is right there.

>> reporter: just seconds in, he sees major problems.

>> there is no fixing it, just replacing it.

>> you're the expert, what do you think?

>> you need a new unit, just from looking at it.

>> reporter: a new unit. he says it's getting old, wet on the bottom and this corrosion means the side pipe is leaking. all wrong says our expert. this unit is in tiptop shape. why is this guy telling our mom she needs to pay for a new one?

>> there's no fixing the leak except for replacing it.

>> reporter: the cost, a whopping $1,675.

>> hi. jeff rossen from nbc news. the leak was coming from this valve. did you check this?

>> i didn't see nothing here.

>> reporter: didn't see it. our expert says it was right in front of him.

>> here is where i saw the leak.

>> i'm feeling it. it's bone dry.

>> when i first felt it there, i felt a little bit of wetness.

>> reporter: do you feel it now?

>> no.

>> reporter: neither do i. he couldn't explain that and decided to leave. we reached out to the company owner but didn't hear back. but the biggest bill is yet to come. meet joe.

>> i'm just trying to see because i don't want you to have to spend no money you don't have to spend.

>> reporter: that sounds nice. joe spends a lot of time looking, touching, staring at the heater. at first, he says this.

>> i think it's coming from here.

>> reporter: minutes later, he changes his tune.

>> replace it, take this one out and put a new one in.

>> you mean the whole thing?

>> yeah. it has to be coming from that.

>> the price?

>> 1900 bucks.

>> that's what i need to do for this leak?

>> yes, ma'am.

>> reporter: nearly $2,000 to replace a water heater our expert says could last another 10 to 15 years.

>> reporter: why do you want to charge her $ 1900 ?

>> i told her the bottom of the water heater is leaking. it was wet.

>> reporter: our expert says it was a simple explanation.

>> it was easy to fix, a turn of the screw .

>> i told her that.

>> reporter: no, you didn't.

>> i told her that either way .

>> reporter: i was watching hidden camera .

>> i told her either way .

>> reporter: i was watching in a hidden camera .

>> i'm gone.

>> reporter: she said what do i need to do to fix this leak? you said a new hot water heater . our expert says it was working perfectl perfectly.

>> all right.

>> reporter: in the end most did what's rite and in the end almost half tried to charge money for work she didn't need.

>> experts says before you pay for a hot water heater you should get estimates and ask friends for a recommendation before you find yourself in the middle of an emergency and quickly searching for a plumber. call your local consumer affairs office to make sure that plumber you hire is licensed.

>> you think it can't be

Daniel Day-Lewis as Abe Lincoln makes unstoppable Oscar force

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - If there is one sure bet in this roller coaster movie awards season, it is that Daniel Day-Lewis will take home the Best Actor statuette at the Oscars on Sunday.

Day-Lewis, known for his meticulous preparation, would become the first man to win three Best Actor Oscars, and awards pundits say it's not hard to see why.

The tall, intellectual actor has swept every prize in the long Hollywood awards calendar for his thoughtful, intense portrayal of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg's movie "Lincoln."

"No-one has emerged to take him on. I don't think he has lost a single (pre-Oscar) race. We have 25 experts and every single one is betting on Daniel Day-Lewis," said Tom O'Neil of awards website Goldderby.com.

More surprising perhaps is that Day-Lewis will also be the first person to win an Oscar for playing a U.S. president. And it has taken a Briton with dual Irish citizenship, portraying one of America's most revered leaders, to do it.

Although "Lincoln" started the Oscar race with a leading 12 nominations, its Best Picture front-runner status has dimmed in recent weeks with the ascendance of Iran hostage drama "Argo."

But Day-Lewis's star has only risen with Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild and British BAFTA trophies, along with a slew of honors from film critics.

LINCOLN FOR A NEW GENERATION

Day-Lewis, 55, plays Lincoln in the last few months of a life cut short by his 1865 assassination in a film that focuses on the president's personal commitment to abolish slavery and end the bloody four-year U.S. Civil War.

He's not the first actor to play Lincoln on screen. Yet his quiet assurance, his adoption of a high-pitch voice rather than the booming tones associated with Lincoln, and the movie's focus on complex political debates have shone new light on a man that many Americans thought they already knew well.

"It's a performance that is subtle. It's not the Lincoln you expect. It's a different interpretation of Lincoln than we have seen and we feel, wow! This could be the way Lincoln was," said Pete Hammond, awards columnist at Deadline.com.

"We are seeing a real human being played out here for the first time and that is extraordinary. Day-Lewis is bringing the character to life in a way we haven't seen in years," Hammond told Reuters.

It took Spielberg three attempts to convince Day-Lewis to play the role. Explaining his decision last month to take the part, Day-Lewis noted that "it was an actor that murdered Abraham Lincoln. Therefore, somehow it's only fitting that every now and then, an actor tries to bring him back to life again."

The London-born actor threw himself into the role with the same devotion that marked his Best Actor Oscar-winning performance as quadriplegic Irish writer Christy Brown in "My Left Foot" in 1989, when he spent weeks living in a wheelchair.

In "Gangs of New York," he sharpened knives on sets between takes to capture the menace of Bill "The Butcher" Cutting, earning another Oscar nomination, and in 2008 he won his second Best Actor Award at the Oscars for his turn as a greedy oil baron in "There Will Be Blood."

TEXTING LIKE LINCOLN

Sally Field, who plays his screen wife Mary Todd Lincoln, said Day-Lewis sent her text messages that were completely in character and in 19th century vernacular over a seven-month period prior to shooting "Lincoln."

Joseph Gordon-Levitt who plays Lincoln's son Robert, said he didn't get to know Day-Lewis until after production wrapped.

"I never met Daniel in person," Gordon-Levitt told reporters. "I only ever met the president, only ever heard the president's voice. I called him sir, and he called me Robert."

With four Academy Award nominations and two wins before "Lincoln," Day-Lewis appears to have barely set a foot wrong in his 30-year career. Yet there have been missteps, including the box-office flop of star-laden musical "Nine" in 2009.

"He was sorely miscast as Guido, the adorable gigolo, and he was not convincing at all. He brought the whole film down," recalled O'Neil. "'Lincoln' is a spectacular career rally for him after that disaster."

While others are betting on Day-Lewis to take home a third Academy Award on Sunday, the actor has been modest about his chances.

"Members of the Academy love surprises, so about the worst thing that can happen to you is if you've built up an expectation. I think they'd probably be delighted if it was anybody else," he told reporters after winning the Screen Actors Guild trophy in January.

Those "anybody elses" in the running are Bradley Cooper for "Silver Linings Playbook," Denzel Washington's alcoholic pilot in "Flight," Joaquin Phoenix for "The Master" and Hugh Jackman in musical "Le Miserables."
