Tunisian leader fears that clashes could spread

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) ? The army moved into a southwestern Tunisian town, an official and witnesses said Friday, the fourth day of protests that have injured more than 300 people.

President Moncef Marzouki said on television that the North African country's government has not "met the expectations of the people" and asked that a new one, smaller and specialized to deal with the unrest, be formed. The current government has about 80 members.

"Tunisia today is at a crossroads," Marzouki said.

Several Tunisian radio stations said the army had moved into Siliana. An official close to Ennahda, the moderate Islamist party of Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali, said the army will replace police in Siliani. The official was not authorized to speak publicly and asked not to be named. No official announcement was made, but eye witnesses corroborated the information, saying that several army trucks and other vehicles moved in.

Up to 10,000 people marched Friday to demand more jobs, government investment and the resignation of the local governor, but the peaceful protest degenerated into clashes with police. Still, the confrontation was far less serious than a day earlier, when the army was brought in briefly to quell protests.

The local hospital says more than 300 people have been injured after days of clashes.

The president expressed concern that the unrest in Siliana could spread to other regions in Tunisia's interior.

Unrest in the poor regions outside the capital of Tunis has particular resonance here. An educated but jobless man selling vegetables in another neglected town triggered protests after he burned himself to death that toppled autocratic leader Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in January 2011. That in turn set off what is now known as the Arab Spring.

"Tunisia today has an opportunity that it must not miss to be a model because the world is watching us and we mustn't disappoint," Marzouki said.

The Tunisian president's ability to bring change is minimal. The prime minister is the determining force in the power structure. Marzouki, who has clashed with Jebali in the past, said new elections should be held "as soon as possible."

There was no immediate comment from the prime minister's office.

Egypt protests continue in crisis over Mursi powers

CAIRO (Reuters) - Hundreds of demonstrators were in Cairo's Tahrir Square for a sixth day on Wednesday, demanding that President Mohamed Mursi rescind a decree they say gives him dictatorial powers, while two of Egypt's top courts stopped work in protest.

Five months into the Islamist leader's term, and in scenes reminiscent of the popular uprising that unseated predecessor Hosni Mubarak last year, police fired teargas at stone-throwers following protests by tens of thousands on Tuesday against the declaration that expanded Mursi's powers and put his decisions beyond legal challenge.

Protesters say they will stay in Tahrir until the decree is withdrawn, bringing fresh turmoil to a nation at the heart of the Arab Spring and delivering a new blow to an economy already on the ropes.

Egypt's Cassation and Appeals courts said they would suspend their work until the constitutional court rules on the decree, which has further damaged Mursi's already testy relationship with the country's judges.

In a speech on Friday, Mursi praised the judiciary as a whole but referred to corrupt elements he aimed to weed out.

A spokesman for the Supreme Constitutional Court, which declared the Islamist-led parliament void earlier this year, said on Wednesday that it felt under attack by the president.

"The really sad thing that has pained the members of this court is when the president of the republic joined, in a painful surprise, the campaign of continuous attack on the Constitutional Court," said the spokesman Maher Samy.

Senior judges have been negotiating with Mursi about how to restrict his new powers, while protesters want him to dissolve an Islamist-dominated assembly that is drawing up a new constitution and which Mursi protected from legal review.

Any deal to calm the street will likely need to address both issues. But opposition politicians said the list of demands could grow the longer the crisis goes on. Many protesters want the cabinet, which meets on Wednesday, to be sacked, too.

Mursi's administration insists that his actions were aimed at breaking a political logjam to push Egypt more swiftly towards democracy, an assertion his opponents dismiss.

"The president wants to create a new dictatorship," said 38-year-old Mohamed Sayyed Ahmed, who has not had a job for two years. He is one of many in the square who are as angry over economic hardship as they are about Mursi's actions.

"We want the scrapping of the constitutional declaration and the constituent assembly, so a new one is created representing all the people and not just one section," he said.

The West worries about turbulence in a nation that has a peace treaty with Israel and is now ruled by Islamists they long kept at arms length. The United States, a big donor to Egypt's military, has called for "peaceful democratic dialogue".

Two people have been killed in violence since the decree, while low-level clashes between protesters and police have gone on for days near Tahrir. Violence has flared in other cities.

WRANGLES

Trying to ease tensions with judges, Mursi said elements of his decree giving his decisions immunity applied only to matters of "sovereign" importance, a compromise suggested by the judges in talks.

That should limit it to issues such as declaring war, but experts said there was much room for interpretation. The judges themselves are divided, and the broader judiciary has yet to back the compromise. Some have gone on strike over the decree.

The fate of the assembly drawing up the constitution has been at the centre of a wrangle between Islamists and their opponents for months. Many liberals, Christians and more moderate Muslims have walked out, saying their voices were not being heard in the body dominated by Islamists.

That has undermined the work of the assembly, which is tasked with shaping Egypt's new democracy. Without a constitution in place, the president's powers are not permanently defined and a new parliament cannot be elected.

For now, Mursi holds both executive and legislative powers. His decree says his decisions cannot be challenged until a new parliament is in place. An election is expected in early 2013.

"If Mursi doesn't respond to the people, they will raise their demands to his removal," said Bassem Kamel, a liberal and former member of the now dissolved parliament that was dominated by Mursi's party, a wing of the Muslim Brotherhood.

He said Tuesday's protest showed that Egyptians "understood that the Brotherhood isn't for democracy but uses it as a tool to reach power and then to get rid of it".

Protecting his decisions and the constituent assembly from legal review was a swipe at the judiciary, still largely unreformed since Mubarak's era.

One presidential source said Mursi wanted to re-make the Supreme Constitutional Court after it declared the parliament void, which led to its dissolution by the then ruling military.

Both Islamists and their opponents broadly agree that the judiciary needs reform, but Mursi's rivals oppose his methods.

The courts have dealt a series of blows to Mursi and the Brotherhood. The first constituent assembly, also packed with Islamists, was dissolved. An attempt by Mursi in October to remove the unpopular general prosecutor was also blocked.

In his decree, Mursi gave himself the power to sack the prosecutor general and appoint a new one, which he duly did.

Minister: Lembergs is a problem of society | Baltic News Network ...

Edmunds Sprudzs

In his interview to Krustpunkt? programme of Latvian Radio, the minister says that he understands ? society sometimes protects and supports officials? illegal activities and thefts if that brings something to the people. However, according to Sprudzs, this kind of attitude of society is not right and it should not be. ?It cannot be possible that we are so tolerant of this ? it cannot be so,? ? notes Sprudzs.

The minister is certain that the moment society starts to change its attitude towards such questions; Lembergs will no longer be able to violate the law.

?I am ashamed that my system has a municipal leader like Lembergs. This kind of charade is unacceptable and is degrading for all of us,? ? said the minister. Sprudzs also added that he, as a minister, had no other choice, but to dismiss Lembergs from the post of Mayor of Ventspils after seeing his violations.

BNN previously reported that Environment Protection and Regional Development Minister Edmunds Sprudzs signed the order to dismiss Ventspils City Council Chairman Aivars Lembergs from his post on Monday, October 22. ?The goal of this order is to achieve fair and responsible management of municipalities in Latvia, including Ventspils. And this is not the goal of just the ministry; this is the goal of Latvia,? ? Sprudzs said.

Lembergs is presented with charges for committing serious crimes ? including bribery, money laundering, violation of restriction imposed to a state official and using an official status in bad faith.

Android Kids App: Goodnight Moon

Goodnight Moon

Does it get any more classic than this? Developer Loud Crow -- which has brought the works of Sandra Boynton, Beatrix Potter and even Charles Schulz's Charlie Brown to Android -- now has brought us the timeless kids book, "Goodnight Moon."

It's done in the usual Loud Crow fashion. The app can read the book aloud, word for word. Tap a word, and it's sounded out. Or you can choose to read to yourself. As you make your way through the story, you can use a magnifying glass to explore the great green room, and get a closer look at the telephone. And the red balloon. And the picture of the cow jumping over the moon. And there are plenty of animations to keep kids interested. Or, parents who love to reminisce.

If you still need more, in-app purchases will unlock letter and number features in the app. Be sure to take a look at the app after you buy it. It works fine on tablets, but not on my Nexus 4. We've got some demo video after the break.

Dallas, TX (PRWEB) July 12, 2006

Precept Financial Solutions discusses how credit cards can be a double-edged sword in building financial independence. Precept Financial includes a quick self quiz for you to test your credit card debt management savvy.

Independence is an vital part of American life and culture. Americans celebrate living in the Land of the Free. Thus the first amendment right of freedom of expression is one of the most heavily protected rights in the United States Constitution. Being able to express oneself as an individual is at the heart of what it means to experience American civil liberty.

When most people reckon of independence, they reckon of having freedom to do what they want, which in today’s society often centers on having financial freedom. It is believed that as long as one is financially independent, one is able to function as a contributing member of society. Note that where the income comes from is not at issue unless it is the government or public financial aid. Responsible spending so as not to tax the government is the point.

To take the common understanding of “Financial Independence” one step further, it means there is no need for officially documented third party intervention such as a bankruptcy attorney or consumer credit counselor.

Today there are many financial resources to help one in building financial independence, and living and expressing themselves fully. There are different kinds of bank accounts: checking, savings, and CD’s. There are retirement plans and IRA’s, investment opportunities in stocks bonds, 401K’s, mutual funds and the list goes on.

Credit cards can be a fantastic resource to help one in living life fully. Visa brings that point home in their latest advertising campaign: Life Takes Visa! Credit cards enable people to buy things they couldn’t afford otherwise, and allow them to pay off the debt over time.

Credit cards also cover expenses that arise by surprise and can act as somewhat of a buffer in a crisis as needed. The problem is that credit cards can also hinder one?s financial independence. If one does not know how to best manage their debt, which is quite common now-a-days with complex interest-rate calculations and rapidly changing consumer credit laws, credit card debt can become a nightmare. Also, if one relies on credit cards to be their main emergency fall back, they may get a rude surprise.

Even if one plans on paying their credit cards in full each month, there are particulars with some credit cards that are different than others, which if known about and exploited, would maximize one?s credit card debt management ability and one?s ability to be financially independent.

For a quick check on one?s credit card debt management smarts, Precept Financial Solutions has prepared a quick quiz for readers to test their debt management knowledge. To take the quick quiz and test one?s own credit card debt management savvy, click on the file on the right hand side of the screen below the contact information.

Research Suggests Apes and Humans Separated By a Single Gene

The article is crock. Scientists didn't pretend that "all the difference humans and apes comes down to a single gene", they stated that they discovered a new brain gene that is unique to humans.and they are hopeful to find more of the same to help explain what makes us who we are.

They don''t even say that this gene was the "first" and sprang all the others. All they are saying is that it played a significant role in human evolution, and that it appeared from junk DNA after humans evolved from apes.

Being unique to humans, and being the one and only single difference between humans and apes, are two different things. One is a scientific statement and the other is typical media sensationalist drivel.

Avoid early bird remorse: 10 Black Friday gadget do's and don'ts

15 hrs.

With many stores opening Thanksgiving evening, this year you won?t even have to digest your turkey before you put on your elbow pads and line up outside your favorite big box store. But to make body checking your fellow shoppers worthwhile, you?ll need a plan.?You don?t want to spend 12 hours wearing adult diapers to avoid losing a place in line, only to find out that the camera you snatched takes terrible pictures and costs $20 less on the Web.?

Don?t get early birds remorse! Use these tips make sure you really are getting a good deal on Black Friday gadgets.?

1. Do research online prices before you go out
On a normal day, retail stores charge a lot more for electronics than their online competitors. On Black Friday, you may find something that looks like a fantastic sale in the store, but is hardly less than the regular price you would have paid online.?

For example, Best Buy is selling a Windows 8 Professional upgrade disc for $54.99, but before you smash through the plate glass door, you should check and see that Microsoft?has been selling the ?same version of Windows 8 as online download for $40 for several weeks now. Target has a 6-foot HDMI cable on sale for $9.99, even though Newegg sells similar cables for $2.99 at any time of year.

More: Top 8 Black Friday Apps

2. Don?t leave the house for less than $200 in total savings
Let?s do some math to guestimate the cost of standing in line for the possibility, but not the certainty, of a bargain. Assume you will be spending a minimum of 5 hours on travel and waiting in lines for a single store, though for the good deals, you may need to wait in front of the store much longer. If you value your free time at even a low rate of $10 per hour, that?s $50 plus the cost of transportation to and from the store, which we?ll estimate at $4, the cost of one gallon of gas.

The worst part of this equation is that the $54 cost buys you a raffle ticket, where bargains are the prize, because even after spending that money, you could walk away empty handed. With stores often stocking less than a dozen units of their featured deals, there?s a very good chance that you won?t run fast enough or have good enough line position to get what you came for.

If you?re young and bored, maybe it?s worth gambling 5 hours of your life on the possibility that you?ll get a $400 TV for $180, but don?t do it if you?re going to save less than $200 in total on all purchases. When you have a family around, even that amount of savings might be too small and you might value your time at a higher rate. With my luck, I?d wait in line for 12 hours, the store would be out of TVs and my infant son would have taken his first steps while I was standing outside Best Buy. ?

3. Do use bargain aggregrators to find deals online
Shopping online is a much more civilized and time-efficient way to buy gifts and fill out your gadget collection this Black Friday. With dozens of sites, including those for the major brick and mortar retailers, offering sales and coupon codes, it?s easy to miss the best sales. Fortunately, there are a number of deal blogs that do nothing but find and report on the best prices.

My favorite deal aggregators include?LogicBuy,?Tech Bargains,?Ben?s Bargains?and?Fat Wallet. I usually check all four several times a day during the holiday season, just to see what?s for sale before it sells out.

4. Don?t buy an?outdated phone
Many retailers use Black Friday as an excuse to dump outdated products from their inventories. When it comes to phones, just say no, because last year?s mobile devices have slower CPUs, lower-res screens and, in the case of Android devices, often have old versions of the operating system.?

Take for example, the Samsung Galaxy S II that Radio Shack is giving away for free with a two-year contract on Sprint. Yes, free sounds like a good price, but this 2011-era phone feels ancient in comparison to the Galaxy S III which will be available for $50 on Sprint at the same store. ?Not only does the newer model have a sharp 720p screen and a faster processor, it also provides an NFC chip and custom software that lets you transfer files justby tapping phones.

Since you?ll own this phone for at least 20 months before you?re eligible to upgrade, you want a device that?s as current as possible. ?How dumb will you or your giftee feel in 2014 when everyone else is running Android 6 on 1080p screens while you?re stuck with a remnant from 2011?

More:Top Smartphone Gifts for 2012

5. Do buy hard drives, SSDs and other storage / memory upgrades
Whether you?re buying SD memory cards, more RAM, an external hard drive or an SSD upgrade, you can find some incredible deals online this Black Friday. We expect to see 128GB SSDs selling for $50 or less and 256GB models approaching the $100 mark. What better way to say ?I love you?than with an upgrade that doubles or triples the speed of your most important tasks?

You should also be able to find external USB back up drives hovering around $50 for 500GB and $85 for 1TB, maybe less. SD cards and microSD cards make great stocking stuffers and you?ll find 16GB versions of each for under $10 with 32GB capacities for well under $20. RAM is getting a lot cheaper these days so expect to pay $60 for 16GB of laptop memory and around $25 for 8GB. ?

6. Don?t buy a cheap notebook for people you like

Want to punish your teenager for posting inappropriate things to Facebook? Still have a grudge against mom for recycling your comic books? Get revenge by purchasing them low-end Black Friday notebooks that will ruin their computing experiences.?

For under $300, you can find such clunkers as this $179 Compaq door buster?from Walmart??that comes with a sluggish 1.3-GHz AMD C-60 processor, just 2GB of RAM and a low-res 15.6-inch screen. Put away your door busting pepper spray, because a computer like this will be bulky, slow and annoying, even though it can connect to the Internet and run basic apps.

If you?re shopping for a notebook for yourself or someone you actually like, accept nothing less than an Intel Core i3 CPU, 4GB of RAM and a speedy 7,200 rpm hard drive or SSD. Go for a 13 to 14-inch screen for maximum portability or, if you want a larger computer, look for one with a high-res screen (1600 x 900 and above) and good audio playback.

More: 5 Reasons to Spend More Than $500 on Your Next Laptop

7. Do use coupon codes to configure your ideal laptop for less
Rather than buying the cheapest piece of junk notebook you see advertised, look for coupon codes for vendors that let you configure a notebook to your liking such as Dell, Lenovo, Toshiba and HP. With the appropriate price reduction, you can build just the ThinkPad or Inspiron you need and get a hefty chunk off the list price. Find the coupon codes on deal aggregation sites like Logicbuy and Techbargains.?

For example, with the right coupon codes, you can buy the awesome Lenovo ThinkPad T430s with a 1600 x 900 screen and discrete graphics for just $806.

8. Don?t even consider buying a cheap, low-end tablet?
What?s the point of buying a tablet if it can?t run your apps and the picture is such a low resolution that all the pixels are so big that they look like Ben-Day dots. So please for the love of Jobs or the admiration of Android avoid low-cost craplets like the Ematic eGlide EGL25BL that Walmart sells. With its 7-inch resistive touch screen and 1-GHz processor, this sad slate is likely to send you screaming back to your PC.

Even some Black Friday tablets from reputable brands are a rip-off, because they?re way out of date. Take, for example, the $179 Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7-inch that Best Buy is advertising. Yes, we gave the Galaxy Tab 2 7-inch a rating of 4 stars when we reviewed in back in April, but back then a 1024 x 600 display, a 1-GHz dual core CPU and Android 4.0 were fine specs.

Today, you can get the Google Nexus 7 with a quad-core CPU, an HD screen and the latest Android 4.2 OS for $199, well worth the $20 splurge.?

If you can possibly afford it, go for a 7-inch tablet with at least a 720p screen (1280 x 720) or a 9-?to 10-inch tablet slate with a resolution higher than 1080p (1920 x 1080).

More: Hottest Holiday Tablets

9. Do buy accessories and peripherals, especially monitors
On Black Friday, we often see better deals on gadgets you attach to your computer than on the computer itself. So, if you?re planning to purchase a mouse, keyboard, Wi-Fi router or all-in-one printer, Black Friday could be a good time to act.?

Because you can never be too rich, too thin or have too many pixels, an external HD monitor makes a great gift or splurge for yourself. You can grab a 23-inch, 1080p screen for well under $150. This $110 23-inch Dell LED monitor is a great example.

10.?Don't make a major purchase you didn't plan for
That $279 10-inch tablet at Best Buy seems like a steal, but you didn't plan to buy a tablet for yourself this year. Stay away. The easiest way to blow your budget is to buy something you don't really need, just because it seems like a good deal. Make a list of major items you need before you look at the sales listings. Remember, the cheapest gadget is the one you didn't buy.

Mali: Tuareg rebels lose their last base in north

BAMAKO, Mali (AP) ? Islamist extremist rebels say they have pushed secular Tuareg fighters from Menaka, their last base in northern Mali.

Oumar Ould Hamaha, spokesman of the Islamists of MUJAO, said the Tuaregs were forced to retreat from Menaka on Tuesday in fighting that killed more than 100.

But the spokesman for the Tuaregs, Moussa Ag Assarid, said from Paris that his group is still fighting in part of Menaka against the Islamists of MUJAO and their allies, al-Qaida of the Islamic Maghreb.

Bajan Ag Hamatou Menaka, a member of the National Assembly of Mali, said many civilians fled the shelling of Menaka by the Islamists. He said many fled across the border to Niger and others went into the surrounding desert. He said 12 civilians were killed by the bombing.

Republicans Return Romney's Parting Gift

By MICHAEL FALCONE ( @michaelpfalcone ) and AMY WALTER ( @amyewalter )

NOTABLES:

UNMASKED - THE AGENT WHO LAUNCHED THE PETRAEUS PROBE: ABC's Brian Ross reports for "Good Morning America" that the FBI agent who launched the probe was identified overnight. Tampa socialite Jill Kelley went to 47-year-old bureau veteran Fred Humphries, whom she knew personally, to report she had received harassing emails from Paula Broadwell. According to his lawyer, Humphries helped launch the investigation and later approached a member of Congress when he thought there was a cover-up. http://abcn.ws/S044Ma Additional reporting form ABC's Rhonda Schwartz and Jason Ryan: http://abcn.ws/ZN40mt

PETRAEUS TO TESTIFY: Amid the scandal, former CIA Chief David Petraeus will testify on the attack in Benghazi, Libya, ABC's Martha Raddatz reports. http://abcn.ws/XIw3VD

OBAMA ADDRESSES THE SCANDAL: President Obama held his first press conference since his re-election and ABC's Jonathan Karl reports for "World News" that Obama said former CIA chief David Petraeus failed to meet his own standards. "I have no evidence at this point, from what I've seen, that classified information was disclosed that in any way would have made an impact on our national security." http://abcn.ws/XcbIsI

TROOPS, FAMILIES FROM JAKE TAPPER'S 'THE OUTPOST' WEIGH IN: The scandal involving Gen. David Petraeus, and now Gen. George Allen, has hit as ABC's Jake Tapper debuted his book about American military courage, "The Outpost: An Untold Story of American Valor," which retells one of the war in Afghanistan's deadliest battles. On Wednesday, some troops and families who appear in the book told Jake what they think of the current scandal: Former Sergeant, Blackfoot Troop, 6-4 Cav: "I think it is a shame how selfish our leaders have become starting at the top. I served in the Army for 6 years and from day one 'integrity' was drilled into everything we do. As a sergeant, I tried to live the best I could hoping others would do the same. Our men and women are putting their lives on the line everyday and deserve to have leaders who uphold our values." ? A Gold Star mother whose son, a member of Black Knight Troop, 3-61 Cav, was killed in the October 3, 2009 attack on Combat Outpost Keating: "Disgusted, with all the time they put in to these females, when did they have time for the troops. They are the ones the soldiers are to look up too. lead by example." http://abcn.ws/ Xch47q

UNION CHIEF - THERE IS NO FISCAL CLIFF: AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka will deliver a speech in Washington, DC today - his first since meeting with President Obama along with other labor and progressive leaders this week. Here's a preview of what he will say: "There is no fiscal cliff! What we're facing is an obstacle course within a manufactured crisis that was hastily thrown together in response to inflated rhetoric about our federal deficit. Don't misunderstand me. I don't for a moment think that America's deficit is not a long-term problem. It is, but it's not our short term crisis. But all the deficit chatter has distracted us from our real crisis-the immediate crisis of 23 million unemployed or underemployed workers, a crumbling national infrastructure, an under-supported manufacturing sector, all of which require significant federal investments, all of which will allow our economy to grow out of this crisis, instead of digging us further in."

THE NOTE:

It's been just over a week since his defeat at the hands of President Obama and already a chasm between Mitt Romney and some prominent members of the Republican Party seems to have opened up.

The failed GOP presidential hopeful's candid assessment of why he lost the race, which he offered on conference calls with donors yesterday, instantly drew a sharp rebuke from Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal who called Romney's take "absolutely wrong."

Romney told top donors he came up short on Nov. 6 because "what the president's campaign did was focus on certain members of his base coalition, give them extraordinary financial gifts from the government, and then work very aggressively to turn them out to vote, and that strategy worked." (Watch ABC's David Muir's "World News" report: http://abcn.ws/XccplI )

According to Romney some of the best "gifts," went to Hispanic voters, a group that voted overwhelmingly for President Obama.

"One, he gave them a big gift on immigration with the DREAM Act amnesty program, which was obviously very, very popular with Hispanic voters, and then number two was Obamacare," Romney said on a conference call, audio of which was obtained by ABC News.

Romney added, "It's a proven political strategy, which is, give a bunch of money to a group and, guess what, they'll vote for you."

But speaking at a Republican Governors Association meeting in Las Vegas, Gov. Jindal dismissed Romney's explanation during a press conference yesterday.

"I don't think that represents where we are as a party and where we're going as a party," Jindal, a potential 2016 GOP presidential contender, said. "If we're going to continue to be a competitive party and win elections on the national stage and continue to fight for our conservative principles, we need two messages to get out loudly and clearly: One, we are fighting for 100 percent of the votes, and secondly, our policies benefit every American who wants to pursue the American dream." http://politi.co/RUVQpV

And Romney's appraisal even sounds discordant when compared to the words of his own campaign spokesman, Kevin Madden, who spoke on a panel at the Atlantic's Washington Ideas Forum yesterday.

"I don't think the Obama campaign gets enough credit for actually changing the electorate," Madden said. "I think their turnout model is extraordinary. They did very well, and they made sure they had the exact model of the electorate that they needed to win." http://bit.ly/SWcLGm

Back at the gathering of governors in Las Vegas, former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour didn't mince words, calling for a "brutally honest assessment of what we did," and recommending a "a very serious proctology exam" for the GOP. http://bit.ly/W83jFg

While his Republican counterparts were recommending the political equivalent of a colonoscopy for their party, Romney ended the conference call with donors yesterday on a wistful note.

"We're still having a hard time, just contemplating what could have been versus what is, and it just doesn't seem real, we're still in the stage of denial at my house," Romney said chuckling. "We still think the campaign is going on."

NOTE IT!

The Note's virtual political roundtable.

ABC's RICK KLEIN: If Mitt Romney really believes he lost the election because President Obama gave key voting blocs "gifts" - or, if he doesn't believe it but continues to tell people that he does - he's doing no favors to the Republican Party, his own role in it, and the healing of divisions after the election. It gives Romney and the GOP an easy out that won't result in a productive internal party conversation; Republicans are not going to out-gift Democrats, at least not this side of a Medicare prescription drug benefit. And of course, it echoes the "47 percent" comment, which is why Gov. Bobby Jindal came out strong in denouncing the sentiment. More immediately, it steers the nation back toward division and confrontation, as the post-election glow of healing fades faster than anticipated.

MORE HIGHLIGHTS FROM ROMNEY'S CALL WITH DONORS: Courtesy of ABC's Chris Good, below are some highlights from one of at least two calls Mitt Romney held with donors yesterday, explaining President Obama's election win and blaming it on giveaways to voters in the Obama coalition.

-Romney credits his team and said there was "really no drama in the campaign."

-Romney says president Bill Clinton called him after the election and said he might have won if not for Hurricane Sandy. Romney: "I spoke with president Clinton the day before yesterday, he called and spent thirty minutes chatting with me. He said a week out I thought you were going to win. And he said, but the hurricane happened, and it gave the president a chance to be presidential, and to look bipartisan, and you know he got a little more momentum, and of course he also said that when he was watching Ann speak at the Republican convention, he decided he was tempted to join the Republican Party. So he may have just been effusive with generous comments as he chatted."

-Romney on the "gifts" to Hispanic voters: "For any lower-income Hispanic family, Obamacare was massive, I mean for-the average income for a household in America is fifty thousand dollars a year, that's the median, fifty K per year. For the Hispanic household, my guess is it's lower than that, maybe it's forty thousand a year. For a home earning let's say thirty thousand a year, free health care, which is worth about ten thousand dollars a year, I mean is massive, it's huge. So this-he did two very popular things for the Hispanic community."

-The primary was "nuts." Romney: "We had 20 Republican debates, that was absolutely nuts, it opened us up to gaffes and to material that could be used against us in the general, and we were fighting these debates for a year, and the incumbent president just sat back and laughed." Romney said he wants his group of donors to stay together to pressure Republicans to abbreviate their primary process.

-Criticized networks that hosted debates. Romney's suggestion for the debates next time: "agree that we're gonna do, you know, I dont' know, eight debates, and we're gonna, we're gonna do one a month, and we're gonna pick stations that are reasonable, it's not all gonna be done by CNN and NBC, alright, I mean we're gonna try and guide this process so that it's designed to showcase the best of our people as opposed to showcasing liberals beating the heck out of us."

THE BUZZ:

with Chris Good ( @c_good)

OBAMA'S BUDGET BOTTOM LINE. More from ABC's Jonathan Karl: President Obama drew a hard line on budget talks: that any deal must include tax increases on the wealthy. "More voters agree with me on this issue than voted for me, so we've got a clear majority of the American people," Obama said at the news conference. WATCH: http://abcn.ws/XcbIsI

OBAMA OFFERS AN OLIVE BRANCH. ABC's Devin Dwyer reports on President Obama's news conference yesterday: President Obama today heaped praise on his defeated rival, GOP nominee Mitt Romney, saying the former governor's record and ideas "could be very helpful" in shaping policy over the next four years "My hope is, before the end of the year ? that we have a chance to sit down and talk," Obama told reporters in his first post-election press conference. http://abcn.ws/QfJXg1

PETRAEUS CALLED TO THE HILL. ABC's Sunlen Miller reported Wednesday morning that David Petraeus has told Sen. Dianne Feinstein he will appear before her Senate intelligence committee, and ABC's SarahParnass follows up: Republican senators and representatives-and at least one top Democrat-urged the former Afghanistan general to testify, despite his resignation from his post as CIA director. ? Petraeus was scheduled to testify at a Senate Intelligence hearing on Benghazi, set for 2:30 p.m. Thursday, but because of his resignation in light of the disclosure of his affair with biographer Paula Broadwell, Acting CIA Director Mike Morell was scheduled to appear in his place at the closed-door hearing. Senate Intelligence Committee members are likely to meet casually today to discuss what to do next regarding Petraeus, according to an aide to Feinstein, but so far no additional meetings or hearings have been scheduled in regards to Petraeus' extramarital affair, nor Benghazi. http://abcn.ws/REOjKK

PAULA BROADWELL STRIPPED OF SECRET CLEARANCE. ABC's Pierre Thomas and Martha Raddatz report: aula Broadwell, the author suspected of carrying on an affair with former CIA director David Petraeus, has been stripped of her military security clearance after a federal probe alleged she was storing classified military material at her home. "Appropriate actions with regard to this officer's clearance and access have been taken," said Army spokesman George Wright of Broadwell, an Army reservist and West Point graduate. http://abcn.ws/UHjDqE

KRAUTHAMMER'S CONSPIRACY THEORY. ABC's Sarah Parnass reports: [A] growing number of conservative commentators contend that the resignation of former CIA Director David Petraeus is more than simple amends made for a personal wrong. Charles Krauthammer, the Fox News and Washington Post commentator, believes the Petraeus' sex scandal is linked to a closed briefing that he gave two days after the attack that killed four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, in Benghazi, Libya. ? Krauthammer said on Fox News Tuesday that ties he sees between what Petraeus' told the Congress in September and his fear for his future at the CIA make his affair with biographer Paula Broadwell important to the public. http://abcn.ws/UrnPue

SENATORS WANT 'WATERGATE-STYLE' HEARINGS ON BENGHAZI. As the Petraeus scandal heats up, so does Republican senators' interest in the Benghazi attack, ABC's Sunlen Miller reports: Three Republican Senators today called for the establishment of a Watergate-style select congressional committee to investigate the administration's handling of the attack on the US consulate in Benghazi. "We believe the complexity and the gravity of this matter warrant the establishment of a temporary select committee that can conduct an integrated review of the many national security issues involved," Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said today. The Senator, along with Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-NH., and Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-SC., called for former CIA director Gen. Petraeus as well as Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to testify before the committee, if the Senate approves its formation. They intend to probe "all the way up to the President of the United States."

BOEHNER REJECTS MIDDLE-CLASS TAX EXTENSION. Sound familiar? After President Obama called on Congress to extend the Bush tax cuts only for lower incomes, ABC's John Parkinson reports: [House Speaker John] Boehner rejected the president's call earlier Wednesday for House Republicans to quickly pass Senate legislation that would extend middle class tax cuts, and he alternatively called on the Senate to take up House-passed legislation to extend all of the current tax rates for one year. "Instead of the House moving on the Senate bill, the Senate ought to move on the House bill," Boehner said. "We are not going to hurt our economy and make job creation more difficult, which is exactly what that plan would do. It's not the direction that we want to go because it's going to hurt job creators in America." http://abcn.ws/T37i2P

MCCAIN VOWS TO BLOCK SUSAN RICE? ABC's Sunlen Miller reports: Some Republican senators are indicating that they would do "whatever is necessary" - including a filibuster - to stop UN Ambassador Susan Rice from becoming the next secretary of state, if nominated by President Obama. "I don't trust her and the reason I don't trust her is because I think she knew better and if she didn't know better she shouldn't be the voice of America," Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said today, "I don't think she deserves to be promoted, there are a lot of qualified people in this country the president could pick but I am dead set on making sure we don't promote anybody who is an essential player in the Benghazi debacle." Rice, along with Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., are reportedly being considered among others to replace Secretary of State Hillary Clinton when she steps down. http://abcn.ws/W9cAZ7

?AND OBAMA BRISTLES. After Sens. John McCain and Lindsey Graham have threatened to block the nomination of U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice, if President Obama seeks to make her Hillary Clinton's replacement as secretary of State, ABC's Elizabeth Hartfield and Sunlen Miller report: "They should go after me," [Obama] said. "If Senator McCain and Senator Graham and others want to go after somebody, they should go after me," said Obama [in his news conference Wednesday]. "And I'm happy to have that discussion with them. But for them to go after the U.N. ambassador, who had nothing to do with Benghazi and was simply making a presentation based on intelligence that she had received and to besmirch her reputation is outrageous." http://abcn.ws/TGcPbV

ANGUS KING PICKS A SIDE. ABC's Sunlen Miller reports: Maine's newly elected Independent senator-elect, Angus King, announced today that he'll caucus with the Democrats in the Senate, boosting the party's control to 55 seats, compared with 45 held by Republicans in the new Congress. "I have decided to affiliate with the Democratic Caucus because doing so will allow me to take independent positions on issues as they arise and at the same time be an effective representative of the people of Maine," King announced in Congress this morning. http://abcn.ws/T4tdYs

RON PAUL'S FAREWELL SPEECH: 'OUR CONSTITUTION ? HAS FAILED.' In a sprawling, 52-minute address-likely his last ever from the House floor-Rep. Ron Paul blasted what he calls an authoritarian government, corporations, politicians, undeclared wars, the federal reserve-in a nutshell, the entire U.S. political system. "Our Constitution, which was intended to limit government power and abuse, has failed," Paul said. "The Founders warned that a free society depends on a virtuous and moral people. The current crisis reflects that their concerns were justified." And yet, Paul also said the answer lies in a return to the Constitution and its restrictions on governmental power. Read about it and WATCH, courtesy of C-SPAN: http://abcn.ws/T38bIM

ANOTHER GEORGE BUSH CONSIDERS A RUN IN TEXAS. ABC's Elizabeth Hartfield reports: Political observers, take note of this name: George Prescott Bush. The son of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and nephew of former President George W. Bush filed paperwork with the Texas Ethics Commission to run for office, and is apparently considering a run for land commissioner in the Lone Star State. Bush's filings did not specify the office that interests him, but his father today sent an email to his own supporters asking for donations to George P's exploratory account. In the email, Jeb specified that his son was eyeing the job of land commissioner in 2014. http://abcn.ws/SXCz51

SECESSION-SIGNATURE STATES TOOK MILLIONS IN FEDERAL MONEY. After a wave of user-submitted petitions has hit WhiteHouse.gov, calling on President Obama to let states secede from the Union, ABC'S Sarah Parnass reports: Census records show that six of the seven states that amassed more than 25,000 signatures on their petitions to form independent nations in the past week took more than $10 million in revenue from the federal government that year. The seven states-Texas, Florida, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee and North Carolina-took more than 23 percent of all federal revenue allotted to the states that year. http://abcn.ws/QICFkV

NOTED: UNION FOREVER! ANTI-SECESSION PETITIONS GAIN CLICKS, TOO. The seceders have gathered online "signatures" at a rapid pace, but some snarky anti-secession petitions at the White House site "We the People" have taken aim at them. Among the most bitter and retributive, one asks Obama to strip the citizenship of everyone who's signed a petition to secede. It's also the most popular, having gained 10,652 signatures at the time of this posting. Another asks that Austin, Texas, be allowed to secede from the rest of the state (which leads all states in secession signatures) and take several other towns with it. Another asks that any state be required to pay back its share of the federal debt before seceding. http://abcn.ws/SOAt6Z

EU imposes duties on Chinese bone china and ceramics

Published on November 15, 2012 by DesiWireFeed ????? No Comments

BRUSSELS, Nov 15 (Reuters) ? The European Commission imposed provisional duties on ceramic tableware and kitchenware imported from China on Thursday despite opposition from a majority of EU member states.

Fourteen of the EU?s 27 members voted against the planned measures at a meeting of trade specialists in October, a highly unusual move that left the Commission having to rethink its plans.

The Commission can impose provisional duties while an investigation continues. Under EU rules, it only consults member states, but is not bound by their vote.

However, it does need to follow the majority opinion of member states for definitive duties, which would need to be set for these products by May 15. These would normally be set for five years.

The EU?s executive body went ahead with provisional duties ranging from 17.6 to 58.8 percent on Chinese manufacturers, according to the official journal of the European Union.

Ceramic tableware and kitchenware imports from China totalled 728 million euros ($926.6 million) in 2011, according to the Commission, making it among the larger cases under consideration.

The Commission is investigating 44 dumping and subsidies cases, 21 of them involving China. The European Union is China?s biggest trading partner while for the EU, China is second only to the United States.

The Commission launched its largest case to date in September into the alleged dumping of 21 billion euros of solar panels and components by Chinese producers. It added an inquiry into alleged subsidies last week.

The Commission also set provisional duties on Thursday of between 15.9 and 67.8 percent on iron tubes and pipe fittings from China and Thailand. EU imports from the two countries in 2011 totalled 59 million euros.

Although historically, European china was a cheaply priced alternative to the genuine Asian product, the Commission said that in the modern era imports were crowding out domestic sales.

LOCAL DEMAND

Some Chinese manufacturers argued that Chinese-looking items should be excluded from duties, saying that producers had always exported them to Europe and that they had special uses.

But the Commission disagreed, saying EU producers could also manufacture Chinese-style ceramics.

European importers say the duties would harm consumers and traders and argue that European producers cannot meet local demand, meaning imports would be sought from other countries, such as Bangladesh and Vietnam.

They and Chinese producers hope EU members that voted against the measures will continue their opposition.

Some members, such as from Scandinavia, tend to vote against duties as a matter of free-trade principle. Others said they were unconvinced by the Commission?s arguments and data in this case.

In 2006, in a dumping case concerning shoes from China and Vietnam, the Commission settled for duties for two years, rather than the normal five, in the face of initial opposition from some member states.

However, industry experts say the current Commission is less eager to seek political compromise, preferring a more-ruled based approach. ($1 = 0.7856 euros)

Realtors? Celebrate 100 Years of Quality Service Through the Code ...

ORLANDO ? November 12, 2012 ? (RealEstateRama) ? 2013 will mark the 100th year members of the National Association of Realtors? have subscribed to a strict Code of Ethics. Though the real estate industry itself has evolved over the past century, NAR?s core values and commitment to excellence have remained constant.

As members of an association that?s more than a century old, Realtors? bring a wealth of resources to consumers so that they can give their clients the best possible representation during the transaction process. NAR members have access to advanced educational opportunities and training in real estate specialties, and they also subscribe to the Realtor? Code of Ethics.

NAR President Moe Veissi explained the difference between a Realtor? and a real estate agent. ?The term Realtor? is a registered collective membership mark that identifies a licensed real estate professional who is a member of NAR,? said Veissi, broker-owner of Veissi & Associates, Inc., in Miami. ?Only members of NAR can call themselves Realtors?, and as a condition of membership, Realtors? subscribe to NAR?s strict Code of Ethics. Realtors? are the heart of the deal, and the Code of Ethics is our guiding principle.?

All Realtors? must take quadrennial Code of Ethics training to retain their membership; sessions are being offered during this week?s 2012 Realtors? Conference and Expo. The Code identifies professional responsibilities owed to clients, customers, other Realtors? and the general public. When NAR adopted its Code of Ethics in 1913, it was only the second trade or business group in the U.S. to adopt mandatory ethical standards.

?The Code of Ethics is one way Realtors? demonstrate value to home buyers, sellers and investors,? said Veissi. ?Buying a home is one of the most important investments people will make in their lifetimes, so having a Realtor? who abides by a Code of Ethics can provide an added layer of security.?

Most of today?s buyers and sellers see the value in professional real estate assistance. According to the 2012 NAR Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers, unassisted transactions are at all-time lows, with only nine percent of sellers choosing to sell their home without the help of an agent. Nine out of 10 buyers and sellers said they would use the same agent again or recommend that agent to others.

Speak for Yourself, While you can.. | Terry Abrams Berger

This was a great article I found in the Wall Street Journal back in August written by Tom Lauricella.? Hope you find it interesting.. Terry

By TOM LAURICELLA

Parents, it?s time to be an adult when it comes to talking to your kids about your late-in-life planning.

Many times the burden of managing a parent?s deteriorating health or financial situation means an adult child has to step into their parent?s shoes.

But parents often can accomplish more by stepping into their former role and taking the lead. Doing so can head off divisive?and costly?family feuds.

The primary task is providing guidance for the possibly difficult times ahead: communicating your wishes about health care and a funeral, information about things like finances, your will and what to do with the family home.

?I?ve seen situations where the closest of families were torn apart by fights over items, that if sold, would cost a fraction of the legal fees,? says Philip Bouklas, a New York City attorney who specializes in estate planning.

There?s usually a reluctance to have these conversations, and it stems from more than being forced to talk about death, or the unpleasantness of telling a child that he or she won?t be getting the family silver. There are entrenched family dynamics at play.

?Part of it is the culture of the family,? says Anthony Serra, an attorney in Pennington, N.J., whose practice includes serving as a mediator for family disputes over elder care. ?If that parent hasn?t discussed their problems with their children all along?it?s going to require a change in the nature of the relationship,? he says.

Some parents don?t like to talk about money. If their finances are fragile, they may be embarrassed. Conversely, if they have a big nest egg, they may be concerned that a child would misuse it.

But such reticence can backfire, says Elizabeth Forgotson Goldberg, an elder-law attorney in Bethesda, Md. She has served as a court-appointed conservator, assigned to manage elderly persons? finances, and has seen cases where the person had assets that their families didn?t know about.

?People will say, ?My mom gets $1,300 in Social Security, and that?s it,? ? says Ms. Goldberg. ?But it turns out there are other assets nobody knew about that could have been used to take care of the person at home? instead of a nursing home. ?As much as they don?t want to tell their children about assets they have, it won?t be used for their own care if nobody knows about it,? she adds.

Hard-earned savings also shouldn?t end up claimed by the state as abandoned.

The biggest financial asset at stake is often the parents? home. A parent may transfer the title to a child to help with long-term care planning.

But after the parents die, a home can become a source of friction among children, says Mr. Bouklas. There are endless variations: a child may be living in the house; one child wants to sell, while the others do not; there may be a fight over the purchase price.

To help avoid these problems, Mr. Bouklas has parents and children sit down, agree on how the home will be handled, then enter a family agreement before the deed is signed over.

The nightmare situation for many families is a court fight over a will. As unappealing as it sounds, parents should spell out to their kids their reasoning for how they are dividing their assets, along with their thinking for who will be the executor or have power of attorney.

?By having a dialogue, at least you have explained yourself, and [family members] aren?t going to speculate, ?You didn?t love me? or, ?You didn?t trust me,? ? Mr. Serra says.

Of course, that could involve breaking some bad news. ?But the best you can do is at least attempt to have the discussion,? Mr. Serra adds.

Often a parent wants to favor a child in a will who has acted as a caregiver. That can be addressed in a document called a caregiver agreement, which Mr. Serra says can also serve as a centerpiece for a family discussion on these tough issues.

Arline Kardasis, founder of Norwood, Mass.-based Elder Decisions, which specializes in family conflict resolution, says it?s helpful for parents to have these talks with all the children at once, rather than one-on-one.

?Sometimes if they have individual conversations, they think they heard something different than a sibling did?and sometimes they did!? she says.

With everybody in the same room, Ms. Kardasis says, parents have a chance to say: ?These are my intentions, these are the reasons?I have the absolute right to make these decisions, and I?m hoping it won?t cause discord among you after I?m gone.?

The ideal response from the children, Ms. Kardasis says: ?We will honor that.?
