Pets Share Our Environment and Our Diseases | Politics and ...

When Janet Riordan returned home from a European vacation in January, she expected a storm of tail wagging and barking from her seven-year-old golden retriever, Reggie. The moment she saw him, she knew something was wrong. ?He came to me in my arms and appeared to be sobbing. I had never seen an animal behave like that,? said Riordan, who lives in Mequon, a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

A veterinarian confirmed her fears: Reggie had an aggressive form of lymphoma, a cancer of the white blood cells. Riordan knew the toll that lymphoma could take. Four years earlier her father died of it. ?It was devastating,? Riordan said. ?I never thought I would lose my dad and my dog to the same disease.?

Pet owners share their homes, their exercise habits, and sometimes even their food with their four-legged companions. And increasingly, they are sharing the same diseases: Dogs and cats suffer from obesity, diabetes, heart disease, cancer, thyroid disorders, and asthma, just like humans.

Now researchers are examining the role that pollutants and other environmental factors may play in these dual diseases. Doctors and veterinarians have begun to work together to investigate common risk factors, such as pesticides, air pollutants, cigarette smoke, and household chemicals. ?Because our pets share our environments, they are exposed to many of the same pollutants as us,? said Melissa Paoloni, a veterinary oncologist at the National Cancer Institute in Maryland.

Pets, like many young children, often have higher exposures to lawn and garden pesticides and to household chemicals that can accumulate in dust or on carpets. Scientific research is beginning to reveal some links between their environment and their health. Lawn care chemicals may increase the risk of canine lymphoma and bladder cancer. Cats exposed to flame retardants have a higher rate of thyroid disease, according to one study. And researchers are launching the largest project ever to tackle disease prevention and treatment in dogs. ?People are beginning to realize the untapped resource that companion animals present for research in human health,? said Rodney Page, director of the Colorado State University?s Animal Cancer Center.

Studies in pets can never replace studies in humans, but they can present corroborating evidence. Linking pollutants to human health effects can prove controversial, ?but if we can find the same links in dogs or cats, that can have a powerful effect,? said John Reif, a Colorado State University veterinarian and epidemiologist. ?It?s one more piece of evidence that the link is a real one.?

Riordan will never know what caused Reggie?s lymphoma. Golden retrievers generally have a high rate of cancer, most likely for genetic reasons. But some research suggests that environmental chemicals may play a role in the development of lymphoma in dogs.

Researchers at the University of Massachusetts and the Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine questioned the owners of more than seven hundred dogs about use of pesticides. Roughly one-third of the dogs had been diagnosed with canine malignant lymphoma, while the other two-thirds had either benign tumors or were undergoing non-cancer surgeries.

Dogs whose owners reported use of professionally applied lawn pesticides were 70 percent more likely to have lymphoma, according to the study published in the journal Environmental Research in January. Dogs also were at higher risk of lymphoma if their owners used self-applied insect growth regulators on their yards, such as Nylar, Precor, and Gentrol, which control cockroaches, fleas, and other pests. However, dogs exposed to flea powders, sprays, and on-spot treatments were no more likely to develop lymphoma than those whose owners did not use them,

In addition, Scottish terriers exposed to certain herbicides, including the common weed killer 2,4-D, were more than four times likely to develop bladder cancer than those whose yards were untreated, according to a 2004 by Purdue University veterinarians.

Results of other studies have been mixed, with some showing an increased lymphoma risk in pets exposed to lawn chemicals and others finding no link. Malignant lymphoma in dogs closely resembles non-Hodgkin?s lymphoma. More than 60,000 Americans a year are diagnosed with the disease, making it the sixth most common cancer in the United States. ?The close interaction and shared household environments of dogs and their human owners provides a unique opportunity for evaluating how herbicide and pesticide exposure may contribute to human non-Hodgkin?s lymphoma,? the study authors wrote.

Pesticides may increase the risk of the disease in people, too. Last year, Danish researchers found that people with high levels of DDT and other organochlorine pesticides were more likely to develop non-Hodgkin?s lymphoma years later. ?Clearly dogs are not humans, but physiologically speaking, they are very similar,? said Lisa Barber, a veterinary oncologist at Tufts University and study author.

?The most heartbreaking thing is their short lifespan. It?s also what makes them useful models for human disease,? she continued. Because dogs live accelerated lives compared with humans, researchers can gather information on a lifetime of exposure much more quickly than in people.

Using animals as sentinels for human health is not a new concept. More than one hundred years ago, miners took caged canaries into coal mines to warn them of toxic gases. In the 1950s, thousands of people in Japan died or suffered serious effects from eating mercury-poisoned fish from Minamata Bay. Locals had first noticed strange neurological symptoms in cats, which they described as dancing in the streets before collapsing and dying.

Pets also played an important role in drawing a link between asbestos and mesothelioma. In the 1980s, researchers found high levels of asbestos fibers in the lungs of pet dogs diagnosed with the lung disease. The finding helped increase understanding of the threats that asbestos posed to people, said Reif from Colorado State.

More recently, researchers have found that ozone, the main ingredient of smog, may contribute to asthma in cats, and household tobacco smoke may be a risk factor for nose, throat, and lung cancers in dogs. A rise in hyperthyroidism in cats also has been linked to brominated flame retardants, which are used in upholstery and electronics and contaminate dust and canned cat foods. Cats with overactive thyroids ? which can lead to weight loss, increased appetite, hyperactivity and death ? had higher blood levels of the chemicals, according to one small study led by Environmental Protection Agency scientists.

Because of their meticulous grooming habits, cats may ingest a lot of dust. The link to hyperthyroidism in felines ?should be alarming to parents of crawling toddlers who explore their environments by putting everything in their mouths,? said Donna Mensching, veterinary medical director of the Washington Poison Center in Seattle.

Toddlers with high exposure to the flame retardants have lower IQs, according to one study. The chemicals also have been linked to altered thyroid hormones in pregnant women, which might harm a baby?s brain development.

Looking at the way environmental pollutants might interact with genetics in animal breeds susceptible to certain diseases may benefit human health as well. ?We know something about their breed history and susceptibility to certain diseases, which may make it easier to tease out gene-environment interactions,? said Dr. Robert A. Hiatt, an epidemiologist at the University of San Francisco and a former family physician. The functions of certain genes are very similar in dogs and humans, according to Hiatt. ?What we learn from pets may also be applicable to humans,? he said.

One of many questions the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study aims to address is how environmental chemicals may interact with genes in a breed that is susceptible to health problems. An estimated 60 percent of golden retrievers die from cancer, according to the Morris Animal Foundation, a nonprofit group that is funding the study. As a breed, they may be genetically susceptible, regardless of what chemicals they may have been exposed to.

The nationwide study will enroll 3,000 young golden retrievers and follow them through their entire lives. Page, one of the lead investigators, likens it to the Nurse?s Health Study, one of the longest running women?s health studies in the country.

?The opportunity will be quite seminal and transformative in terms of exposure science, because it will offer a new set of data with which to evaluate similarities with human exposure data,? Page said.

This research also may help experts develop treatments for diseases. ?We can cure anything in a mouse, but so many times new drugs fail miserably when taken straight from lab animals to human trials,? said Heather Wilson-Robles, a veterinary oncologist at Texas A&M University.

Dogs and cats develop diseases spontaneously for many of the same reasons people do, which means experts can predict from pets how a new drug may act in humans. ?Mouse models are really important in the development of new treatments, but we are skipping a step when we take a drug from lab animals to humans without first looking to our veterinary patients,? Wilson-Robles said.

In Reggie?s case, Riordan and her vet looked first to human studies to form a treatment plan. He received chemotherapy and experimental high-dose vitamin C injections, a treatment that Riordan had uncovered while researching options for her father. ?We thought if it worked in humans, it might work for dogs,? she said.

In February, less than two months after being diagnosed with canine lymphoma, Reggie died. Riordan wasn?t aware of the link between lawn-care products and lymphoma in dogs, but, she said, ?we were always really careful about chemicals. We don?t use pesticides in our yard or a lot of chemicals in the house.?

While Riordan hopes researchers may one day be able to prevent dogs like Reggie from getting cancer, she knows tragedy comes with pet ownership. ?We love them so much that even if they don?t die of cancer, they will ultimately break our hearts,? she said.

6 Tips for Inspiring Your Child to Write : Remembrance Press

If you have more than one child, you already know how they all have different personalities, spiritual gifts, and learning styles. I?m convinced this affects the kind of writing they love to do. I have four children, and the journey to equip them to write has been interesting and challenging at times. Visual learners often have an edge on auditory or kinesthetic learners. They see sentence structure and punctuation as they read; they?re born editors. Sometimes auditory and kinesthetic learners can zoom right past punctuation, running one sentence into another. Absorbed in content, they often don?t see anything but the words. The irony is that many auditory and kinesthetic children make the best storytellers. Of course, I?m speaking in generalities. Most children have a secondary learning style that complements the first, but depending on how your child is wired, he may struggle with the act of writing, classifying himself a non-writer.

Nonetheless, all children love to talk about what?s important to them. Have you heard the writing potential in your children?s oral story accounts? Do you have a child who struggles with the act of writing but could be a great writer if someone would just connect the dots for him? We want all of our children to freely communicate what?s on their hearts, to tell us about life from their perspective. Well, journaling their life stories on a regular basis allows them to do that, giving them ever-present subject matter from which to explore how to use language and grow as a writer.

To inspire your children in the area of journaling, here are five practical steps to take to unleash the writer within.

1. Help your child understand the writing process.

Writing is thinking. It?s a process by which we take the inner working of our minds and hearts?our thoughts, perceptions, and feelings, and express them on paper. Your child needs to know these things: You don?t know what you?re going to say until you start to say it. Writing is a process of discovery. It will take your mind places you didn?t know it was going. It will make you use words you didn?t even know you knew?and that?s the fun part.

If your child says there is nothing to write about on any certain subject, just tell him he won?t know what he?s going to say until he actually starts saying it. Tell him to listen for a title or the first sentence, and once he hears it in his head, take it from there.

2. If you can talk, you can write.

No two people are alike. Each one has a different way of expressing himself?his own writing voice consisting of inborn rhythms, vocabulary choices, and ideas. Is your child an auditory learner? He needs to know his talking voice can become his writing voice. That?s why journaling is so valuable. It will give him an opportunity to become familiar with his unique writing voice as he records his life stories.

3. A reason to write.

Imagine a world without words: no Bible, no books, no journals, no letters?no past, only present. No remembrances of your life because you didn?t like to write or you wouldn?t take the time to write it down. ?Preserving your life stories for now and future generations? is reason enough to write.

4. Write from what you know.

Writing from what you know is much easier than having to make it up. You?re never at a loss for writing material when you write from your personal experience. Have fun and be creative. Everyone can write and should write, not because they have to, but because they get to.

5.Transcribe the entry.

Transcribe journal entries for little children or older children who are not fluent (unable to take all the words they have in their head and put them on paper). Become your child?s scribe until he is able to take over, either through writing in a journal or typing his entries on the keyboard. Help him gain confidence by removing the hindrances until they?re a non-issue.

6. Read other people?s journals entries.

Reading other people?s journal entries is all that is needed sometimes?to unleash the writer within. When my son, Eric (21) was home for a visit in September, we gathered together as he began to read his journal entries from when he was a boy. Then, my daughter, Anna (13), began to read some of the entries I had transcribed for her when she was a little girl. It was a poignant moment as we relived the past through the words of their experience, and it was just what Anna needed to hear. Later she said to me, ?I want to a creative writer just like Eric!??Yes,?I thought,?this is exactly why Eric began to write. I read other people?s journal entries to him.

All four of my children?s journal entries (ages 15 to 2)?can be found in?The Gift of Family Writing. Spanning a period of eight years, I documented the process by which they learned to write, what they wrote, and the simple methods you can utilize to encourage your own children to grow as writers by journaling their life stories as they happen. You can purchase? The Gift of Family Writing here.

Home improvement experts - Zillow Real Estate Advice

Awesome questions.

The first question I would ask you is "how do you intend to use the home?"? What essentially is your strategy, primary residence, rental or combo of the two?

The quality of your materials, fixtures and improvements for your own personal benefit may be different than if you were going keep it as an investment and not live there.

If you're keeping the property as an investment, I would factor in overall area market values as you can over improve a property to the point where you will never recoup your investment.

Second question would be "how long do you intend to hold onto the property?"? Planning to sell within 1-2 years or 15-20?? Certain improvements have lasting value while others depreciate rapidly.

I totally agree with JoEllen that it may be best to consult with an experienced REALTOR.

Advice from someone who views hundreds of properties a year and works with buyers and sellers on a consistent basis can offer you valuable insight into what works and where to best utilize your budget for maximum gain and/or enjoyment!? This has to be within the context of your goals for the property.

Hope this helps!

Take Out a Brick Wall With the Handheld Jackhammer the Size of a Baby [Video]

It usually takes a pretty hefty tool to knock out a brick wall, demolish a concrete staircase, or pulverize a tile shower stall during a bathroom renovation. It's a job for the pounding chisel tip of a demolition hammer or a jackhammer—a tool big enough to require its operator, as The Far Side once suggested, to "let the belly do the work." More »

Benefits of ETF Investing | ETF Trends

ETFs are appealing to investors for various reasons. As recent price wars rage on, there are many other factors that make these funds desirable to investors besides low cost.

?Exchange traded funds have gained immense popularity in the recent past, given their holistic investment approach and tax efficiency, coupled with flexibility and ease of investing. ETFs can be viewed as the ultimate asset allocation instrument providing investors a ready made portfolio of stocks or fixed income securities or both,? Eric Dutram wrote for Zack?s. [The Shifting ETF Landscape]

A broad group of investors are finding ETFs appealing as they study their current portfolios of mutual funds and single stocks, Christian Magoon wrote on Nasdaq.com.

The access that ETFs give retail investors is one reason that these tools are appreciated by investors. The easy investment to niche corners of the market and sectors is a trait that ETFs have, at a reasonable cost. Plus, asset classes, bonds, commodities, futures contracts, currencies and grantor trusts can all be accessed with a targeted ETF.

Transparency of holdings is another favorable characteristic of ETFs. The transparency is also available in real time, not just at the close of a trading day. The daily transparency that an ETF has can help investors with asset allocation and avoid over or under exposure to a certain stock or sector. [Sector Investing with ETFs]

Diversification is another area that an ETF satisfies. The ability to give an investor a well-rounded basket of stocks tracking a sector or country is just one example. Other areas that ETF diversification can assist with is portfolio construction, proper asset allocation and risk mitigation. By investing in a basket of numerous companies, if one stock does not do so well, the downside is eased because there is less exposure to the failing company.

The benefits of ETFs extend beyond this list, and most investors will not realize them until they have invested in them. While low cost is a huge advantage of using ETFs, it is certainly not the only one. [Schwab Takes the Lead in ETF Price War]

But they also warn that there?s still plenty of time for the race to change course. (AP) ? Six weeks from Election Day, President Barack Obama's campaign has momentum ? and a big case of nerves.

Top advisers are both relishing in Obama's edge in key battleground state polling and warning it can change in an instant. They're wary of the many factors that still could derail the Democrat's campaign, from simmering tensions in the Middle East to the three high-stakes presidential debates. They're worried, too, about a flood of negative advertisements from Republican-leaning outside groups and potential complacency among Democratic voters and volunteers who think the race is a lock for Obama.

Also weighing on them: unforeseen domestic or international events that can shake up a close race in the homestretch.

"I can only worry about what I can control," says Jim Messina, Obama's campaign manager.

For now, that means the overall campaign strategy.

Yet, even there, Obama's team is being careful: the Democrat is considering making a late play for traditionally Republican Arizona ? either to win it or to force rival Mitt Romney to spend money to protect GOP turf ? but advisers are weighing the potential that a move like that could backfire by leaving fewer resources for more competitive states.

With just over 40 days until the election and with many states already voting, public and internal polls show Obama leading Romney in many of the eight or so battleground states that will determine the election. But both campaigns are mindful that much can happen in the homestretch, and advisers for each candidate expect the numbers to tighten as more voters tune into the race in the final weeks. By the day, both sides are adjusting their strategies in key states and monitoring how, in voters' eyes, signs of growth in the economy square with an unemployment rate that remains above 8 percent.

The race had been deadlocked until recently when Obama edged ahead in polling after his convention. Even so, neither candidate has been able to put the race out of reach of their opponent, despite the sluggish economy Obama has presided over and a series of missteps by Romney.

At Obama's Chicago campaign headquarters, the mood underscores the balance the campaign is trying to strike: optimism about the trajectory of the race with cautiousness about all the things that could shift the dynamics.

Obama aides are focused on bolstering get-out-the-vote operations in battleground states to buffer against any late shifts in the race, countering negative ads by a crush of Republican-leaning super political action committees ? and living by the mantra of not making too much out of any one poll or event.

Last week, campaign staffers were ordered to be restrained in their response and avoid appearing as though they were declaring victory prematurely when a video surfaced showing Romney telling wealthy donors that 47 percent of Americans believe they are victims. And earlier this month, the campaign sought to keep its focus on the economy, the No. 1 issue for voters, rather than get dragged into a foreign policy debate after a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans were killed in Libya.

The worry about next week's presidential debate ? the first of three in as many weeks ? is clear at the downtown high rise that houses Obama's campaign inner circle and hundreds of staffers. On Oct. 3, most Americans will for the first time see the two men standing side by side, a visual that could make Romney seem more presidential to some voters. And the high-stakes showdowns always carry the potential for a slip-up that can be hard to recover from just weeks before Election Day.

Obama has spent the past few weeks preparing for the debates, though advisers won't say much about it ? other than to try to lower expectations for Obama and raise them for Romney.

Advisers argue that the debate format ? limited to 90 minutes ? works against the sometimes long-winded Obama, who they cast as the underdog on a debate stage.

As Obama adviser Robert Gibbs put it in a CBS interview: "Mitt Romney, I think, has an advantage because he's been through 20 of these debates in the primaries over the last year. He even bragged that he was declared the winner in 16 of those debates."

For all the concerns, even the most anxious Obama aides take some measure of comfort in an Electoral College map that favors the president. He has more pathways to victory than Romney, whose route to the White House becomes all but impossible without a victory in Florida, where polls show the race is tight, or Ohio, where Obama has pulled ahead in surveys.

Signaling confidence, Obama's team is considering competing in Arizona.

Obama looked at competing in Arizona in 2008, but decided against it because of the support there for home state Sen. John McCain, the GOP nominee. Obama still won 45 percent of the vote.

This year, Obama's team talked early on about running in Arizona, which offers 11 electoral votes, but it never did. Now, with an internal Democratic poll showing Obama narrowly leading Romney, Obama's team might make a play for the state that has seen a 160,000 increase in voter registrations by Democratic-leaning Hispanics over the past four years.

Buying television time in Phoenix, the state's largest city, is expensive and Obama advisers are closely watching their finances.

That's not to say that competing in Arizona would be all about winning: going up on the air in the state ? or sending the president in to campaign there, could force Romney to spend valuable resources defending a state he should be able to count on in the quest to reach 270 Electoral College votes needed for victory.

Volusia parents file complaints over special education services ...

Two Volusia County parents of kindergarten boys have filed separate complaints with the school district alleging their sons have not received the educational services they are entitled to under the law.

In one case, the boy, whose?doctor had diagnosed him with an autism spectrum disorder,?has been expressing aggressive behaviors toward other children. The parent and her advocates want a one-on-one aide or behavior tutor for the child,?but they contend that the district?s process is unneccesarily delaying him getting the help he needs. He has been suspended from school twice?this school year.

The other child has been afraid to go to school since attending for three days at the beginning of the school year, according to advocate Jamison Jessup, who is requesting the due process hearings.

School district officials said they were working diligently on both cases when the due process requests were filed.

The Daytona ?Beach News-Journal has a detailed story on the complaints.

(AP) ? In a now familiar global ritual, Apple fans jammed shops from Sydney to Paris to pick up the tech juggernaut's latest iPhone.

Eager buyers formed long lines Friday at Apple Inc. stores in Asia, Europe and North America to be the first to get their hands on the latest version of the smartphone.

In London, some shoppers had camped out for a week in a queue that snaked around the block. In Hong Kong, the first customers were greeted by staff cheering, clapping, chanting "iPhone 5! iPhone 5!" and high-fiving them as they were escorted one-by-one through the front door.

The smartphone will be on sale in the U.S. and Canada hours after its launch in Australia, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Britain, France and Germany. It will launch in 22 more countries a week later. The iPhone 5 is thinner, lighter, has a taller screen, faster processor, updated software and can work on faster "fourth generation" mobile networks.

The handset has become a hot seller despite initial lukewarm reviews and new map software that is glitch prone. Apple received 2 million orders in the first 24 hours of announcing its release date, more than twice the number for the iPhone 4S in the same period when that phone launched a year ago.

In a sign of the intense demand, police in Osaka, Japan, were investigating the theft of nearly 200 iPhones 5s, including 116 from one shop alone, Kyodo News reported. In London, police sought help finding a man wanted in connection with the theft of 252 iPhone 5s from a shop in Wimbledon early Friday morning.

Analysts have estimated Apple will ship as many as 10 million of the new iPhones by the end of September.

Some fans went to extremes to be among the first buyers by arriving at Apple's flagship stores day ahead of the release.

In downtown Sydney, Todd Foot, 24, showed up three days early to nab the coveted first spot. He spent about 18 hours a day in a folding chair, catching a few hours' sleep each night in a tent on the sidewalk.

Foot's dedication was largely a marketing stunt, however. He writes product reviews for a technology website that will give away the phone after Foot reviews it.

"I just want to get the phone so I can feel it, compare it and put it on our website," he said while slumped in his chair.

In Paris, the phone launch was accompanied by a workers' protest ? a couple dozen former and current Apple employees demonstrated peacefully to demand better work benefits. Some decried what they called Apple's transformation from an offbeat company into a multinational powerhouse.

But the protesters ? urged by a small labor union to demonstrate at Apple stores around France ? were far outnumbered by lines of would-be buyers on the sidewalk outside the store near the city's gilded opera house.

Not everyone lining up at the various Apple stores was an enthusiast, though. In Hong Kong, university student Kevin Wong, waiting to buy a black 16 gigabyte model for 5,588 Hong Kong dollars ($720), said he was getting one "for the cash." He planned to immediately resell it to one of the numerous grey market retailers catering to mainland Chinese buyers. China is one of Apple's fastest growing markets but a release date for the iPhone 5 there has not yet been set.

Wong was required to give his local identity card number when he signed up for his iPhone on Apple's website. The requirement prevents purchases by tourists including mainland Chinese, who have a reputation for scooping up high-end goods on trips to Hong Kong because there's no sales tax and because of the strength of China's currency. Even so, the mainlanders will probably buy it from the resellers "at a higher price ? a way higher price," said Wong, who hoped to make a profit of HK$1,000 ($129).

A similar money-making strategy was being pursued in London, where many in the crowds ? largely from the city's extensive Asian community ? planned to either send the phones to family and friends back home as gifts or sell them in countries where they are much more expensive.

"It makes a really nice gift to family back home," said Muhammad Alum, 30, a minicab driver from Bangladesh. "It will be two or three weeks before there is a SIM card there that can work it, but it's coming soon."

Others who had waited overnight said the iPhones cost roughly twice as much in India as in Britain, making them very welcome as gifts.

Tokyo's glitzy downtown Ginza district not only had a long line in front of the Apple store, but another across the main intersection at Softbank, the first carrier in Japan to offer iPhones.

Hidetoshi Nakamura, a 25-year-old auto engineer, said he's an Apple fan because it's an innovator.

"I love Apple," he said, standing near the end of a two-block-long line, reading a book and listening to music on his iPod.

"It's only the iPhone for me."

Chinese protesters: 'The Diaoyu islands belong to China!'

By Ed Flanagan, NBC News

BEIJING ?Following a weekend of anti-Japanese protests that engulfed China, demonstrations hit a crescendo Tuesday with the 81st anniversary of the start of Japan?s occupation of China.

The Mukden Incident, also known as the Manchurian Incident, was a staged bombing by the Japanese military that served as the pretext for the Japanese invasion of China in 1931.

The painful anniversary served to enflame a dispute that has been growing for months over ownership of East China Sea islands called the Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China.

Emotional anniversary reignites anti-Japan protests in China

During recent protests in more than 80 cities across China, Chinese citizens have expressed themselves by taking to the streets and loudly demonstrating outside of Japanese consulates, businesses and online. However, unlike previous protests on the mainland in recent years, the collective anger has been well-documented and disseminated freely online, giving us a unique look at Chinese nationalism unleashed.

See images of some of the more unusual expressions of anti-Japanese anger below.

And behold, a new user didst appear.

Greetings assorted beings of the internet roleplaying world!

I am the maniacal, malevolent, mortifying, monotonous, over-descriptive Wachiru. I am a firm lover of long walks, mass murders, mayhem, and long walks where I generate mass murder and mayhem.

On a more serious note, I have been roleplaying ever since my dearest cousin bought me the third edition rule-set to DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS (dun dun DUN).
As a result, perhaps to my own misfortune, I tend to prefer, and specialize in combat-esque fantasy roles, though I am beginning to appreciate the subtleties of the "Evil Mastermind"

Yes, yes I will feed you all cookies if you read my introduction...now back on subject.

Due to my occupation in the....*gag, cough cough cough* real world, I find myself displaced from my typical tabletop roleplays, and as a result, I have turned to the internet world... Despite many hardships, such as the rumors that there are no women on the internet, the constant assumption that a female roleplayer is also perfectly willing to strip at any moment, and the lack of mass murder I believe I have been fairly successful in small circles.

After my (tiny) group of guild wars roleplayers vanished, I wondered around the gaming community for a span of time. Seeing nothing but bickering and overbearing rules set down by the popular, and not by the logical, I decided to seek out a new regime in a different URL.

And now, with any luck, I have found you, my future family, friends, enemies, and beings of no disposition...

I look forward to murdering you soon! ^_^
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ahem, pardon the maniac above, tis a side effect of playing too many antagonists... Anyway, Hai, I'm Wachi and it's great to be here, and I'm looking forward to meeting and roleplaying with you soon!

Awful Body Art Of The Rich & Famous! The 10 Worst Celebrity Face ...

WENN

By Radar Staff

It?s hard to hide a tattoo, when it?s plastered on your face forever!

While several stars get inked in places where they can hide their body art if needed, others are more fearless and bold about their permanent etchings ? going under the needle and marking their mugs. RadarOnline.com has photos of the 10 worst celebrity face tattoos.

PHOTOS: The 10 Worst Celebrity Face Tattoos

Mike Tyson was one of the first high-profile stars to boldly get a face tattoo and the professional boxer?s facial marking is so famous, that it was even parodied in The Hangover 2.

From high fashion logos to teardrops, Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa, The Game and Birdman all have notably inked faces, but it was Gucci Mane who grabbed the most attention for his facial art of choice. After being ordered to a mental hospital in 2011 following a court battle, the rapper went and got a colorful ice cream cone permanently etched on his right cheek. Not so cool!

Females get face tattoos too! Monica ?Danger? Leon and Kat Von D both have markings on their pretty faces.

Luckily for these stars, if they ever want to get rid of their markings, it can be easier to achieve than one might think.

?Due to the safety and selective nature of current Laser Tattoo Removal technology, and with the concomitant use of occlusive and protective eyewear that completely blocks out the laser energy, laser tattoo treatment of the face and neck can be easily achieved, both effectively and safely,? reveals Dr. Shalini Kapoor, M.D., C.M., Medical Director at LaserAway.

?Interestingly, due to the central anatomic location, face and neck tattoos are generally easier and quicker to remove than a distally located tattoo.?

Which other stars have face tattoos? Find out by clicking here.

(AP) ? The Arizona Cardinals block field goal attempts better than any other team. Just the threat of that happening could make even the most reliable kickers nervous.

That may have affected Stephen Gostkowski when his 42-yard shot at a winning field goal sailed wide to the left, clinching the Cardinals' 20-18 upset of the heavily favored New England Patriots on Sunday.

"We put a lot of pressure on a lot of field goal teams," cornerback and special-team star Patrick Peterson said. "I think he was a little scared of us, honestly. That is why he pushed it left."

Arizona led the league in blocked field goals in each of the past three seasons, then got a block in the season opener a week earlier. On Sunday, the Cardinals even got to a punt by Zoltan Mesko, the first time he's had one blocked in the 122 kicks of his pro career.

Sure, Gostkowski is the most accurate kicker in Patriots history. And he had made all four of his field goal attempts ? three of them longer than 42 yards ? before Sunday's miss on the next to last play.

"Each kick is different and, of course, you can develop a good rhythm and get in the zone," he said. "I had a chance to make a big impact on the game and it turned south."

The Cardinals (2-0) also played well on defense, holding the high-scoring Patriots (1-1) to one touchdown and four field goals and sacking Tom Brady four times. They also did enough on offense ? touchdowns on Kevin Kolb's 2-yard pass to Andre Roberts and Kolb's 5-yard run and two field goals by Jay Feely ? to win for the ninth time in 11 games.

None of those wins was by more than six points, so coach Ken Whisenhunt figures his players know how close they've come to losing and won't get carried away with their success.

"They understand," he said. "We have been in enough close games over the last 10 or so."

Yet the Cardinals are off to a surprisingly good start.

They beat Seattle 20-16 in the opener when they forced Russell Wilson to throw three incompletions from the Arizona 4 in the final minute. Then they handed the Patriots their first loss in their 11 home openers at Gillette Stadium and ended a five-game losing streak against New England.

"Nobody really gave us a chance," Whisenhunt said, "but our guys believed they could do it and it's great to see them operate that way."

The Patriots suffered a big loss when tight end Aaron Hernandez, their most versatile offensive player, hurt his right ankle in the first quarter. He left Gillette Stadium wearing a walking boot and carrying crutches. The Patriots gave no update on the injury or how much time he might miss.

"Aaron's in there almost every play," wide receiver Wes Welker said, "so it changes (play calling) quite a bit."

Coach Bill Belichick added: "You can't go into the game just counting on one guy, any guy. Everybody has to be ready to adjust. It's not the first time a player has been injured in a game."

Kolb started in place of John Skelton, who missed the game with a sprained right ankle. His numbers were hardly spectacular ? 15 completions in 27 attempts for 140 yards. But he kept plays alive by rolling out.

"You can tell he is a veteran quarterback," Whisenhunt said. "He understands what we are trying to do and he did a nice job today of moving in the pocket, being smart with the ball."

The only New England possession that gained more than 47 yards came on its next to last series. Brady completed eight of 10 passes for 82 yards, capped by a 5-yard touchdown throw to Rob Gronkowski, making it 20-18. But the 2-point conversion attempt, a pass to Gronkowski, was broken up by Kerry Rhodes.

The Patriots got the ball back with 1:01 left when Vince Wilfork recovered a fumble by Ryan Williams at the Cardinals 30 with 1:01 left. A 30-yard run into the end zone by Danny Woodhead was nullified by a holding penalty against Gronkowski. New England then moved to the 24 before Brady spiked the ball to stop the clock with 6 seconds remaining.

That's when Gostkowski took the field. So did the Cardinals trying to stop him.

"We put a lot of pressure on a lot of teams with our field-goal block team with me coming off the edge and collapsing the middle," Peterson said. "We just want to continue putting pressure on field-goal teams so things like that can happen, so we can push it left."

NOTES: The Cardinals beat the Patriots for the first time since Sept. 29, 1991. ... The Patriots held Larry Fitzgerald to one catch for 4 yards. ... Welker became the Patriots all-time leading receiver with 562 catches after making five on Sunday. He began the day tied with Troy Brown at 557. ... Brady completed 28 of 46 passes for 316 yards and extended his streak to 34 games with at least one touchdown pass, fourth-best in NFL history. ... Stevan Ridley led the Patriots with 71 yards rushing after running for 125 in the opener.

Ed Morrissey | North Carolina student insurance costs up 51% under ...

Barack Obama and his campaign hoped to make ObamaCare their pitch to get younger voters more enthused about the election this year ? a perverse but not forlorn hope, as I?ll explain in a minute.? That may be even more true in North Carolina, where Democrats are holding their convention this week, and where Obama needs to generate the visible and noticeable excitement among college-age voters that was so apparent in 2008 and has been lacking in 2012.? Peter Hamby at CNN reports why that may be a bigger problem for North Carolina college students in particular, as the costs of their mandated health insurance went up more than half after ObamaCare?s passage:

Forex Tips for the Neophyte: Be Aware of What?s Going On

?While it used to be that the foreign currency exchange market was restricted to financial institutions and governments, private individuals can now dip their fingers into this exciting investment instrument.? Traders in forex are exposed to a highly dynamic and volatile market.? Moreover, this market is highly liquid.

?

It is rarely closed, so any investor who wants to cash in on his or her investments can do so without waiting for a maturity date (as in bonds) or the opening of the stock market the next day.? Somewhere in the world, the forex market is always open.? These factors set the forex market apart from other investment medium like stocks and bonds.

?

For beginners who see promise in the currency market, here are some forex tips to help you understand what this whole new world (pun intended) of investments is about:

?

Tip #1: All currencies all over the world are traded, but there are the Big 4.

?There are some currencies that are not as traded as other currencies.? The most active ones are the British pound, the euro, the US dollar, and the Japanese yen.? They are the ones being traded often because they are the most frequently used currencies in global business transactions.

?Moreover, the countries behind these currencies ? the US, the UK, the European Union, and Japan are the most influential forces in global finance.? Anything that occurs in these countries, whether political, social, economic, or environmental, has a huge impact on their currencies, and thus, the entire forex market.

?As seen in the earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the financial meltdown of Southern Europe, and the recession in the US, currencies have become highly volatile because of these events.?? As someone searching for forex tips who want to get involved in the world of foreign currency trading, it is very important to keep abreast on what is happening in these countries.

?

Tip #2: Currencies do not exist in a vacuum.? They get affected by certain factors.

?As mentioned earlier, not just financial or economic news affects the trading of currencies.? The Tohoku earthquake and tsunami in 2011 dealt a big blow to the Japanese yen, which for more than a decade, has been suffering from the country?s stagnating economy.

?The Olympics in London has caused an increased consumer spending in the country, making the pound stronger.? As of 2011, the euro has been sliding, mainly because of the financial sector crisis in the continent.

?Moreover, it seems that China is pushing for its currency, the renminbi, to play a more active part in international trade.? These two factors are seen to have an adverse effect on the common European currency.

?

As seen in recent years, a global economic slowdown affects all currencies, but in varying degrees.? It is a matter of how each country adapts to the situation that their currencies might get more hit or will be saved from devaluation.

?

As someone who is looking for forex tips and wanting to profit out of the market, you need to be aware of how each currency is affected by world events.
